406.1Last Year This Was A Super Show!CLOSET::COMPTONLinda DTN381-0687 ZKO1-2/C21Wed Sep 05 1990 20:0520
    My husband and I attended four shows last year, and the BOAF was on
    the top of the list at the end of it all. You do have to stick around
    until the bitter end for the raffles if you buy those tickets, but
    the school offers more than adequate space so you can see the birds
    up close and/or listen to the judges during their sessions. One
    plus was the chance to sign up for a 2-4-1 Bird Talk subscription
    (also available at one of the other shows, if memory serves). If
    you have never been to a bird show, it is not so different from a
    cat or dog or horse show (assumes you've been to one of those!),
    which means you see types of birds you wouldn't otherwise have the
    chance to view, and these are typically in top shape, given it is
    a show, so you can avoid the pet store syndrome of feeling sorry
    for the birds (yes, I know there are some great pet stores, but
    I am thinking of the not so great ones). Consider making the trip.
    Refreshments and light lunch fare is supposed to be available, and
    if they are doing it like last year, it was very reasonably priced,
    home-cooked-style, served informally by volunteers in the cafe of
    the school. Dr. Al Decoteau will be judging the parrots again this
    year, from what I have heard lately, and he gives a lot of information
    and encouragement along with his judges comments. /Linda
406.2in Santa ClaraGLASHR::MOEHLENPA_EDThu Sep 06 1990 22:1010
    There was a Bird Expo the other weekend in Santa Clara. I really
    enjoyed it, but would have enjoyed winning the 12wk B&G baby even
    more. The two years of renewal to Bird Talk for the price of one
    (plus getting current issue and Bird Annnual free) were worth the
    price of admission. Also, since my B&G eats me out of house and
    home, finding a wholesaler for the Roudybush pellets she eats was
    also nice.

406.3BIRD TALK SAVING$$ABACUS::BOURGAULTFri Sep 07 1990 16:266
    That's how I renew my subscription each year. It's a great savings!
    Bird Shows/Expos are a great way to see many birds that you only read
    about. It's also a good way in which to meet other bird enthusiasts
    and breeders. I really enjoy it. Hope to see you there.
