| Obviously, I'm no expert but I can pass on what I saw at the aviary
where I just purchased my cockatiel, Sunny. This aviary had hundreds
of birds and they all lived outside. Many (cockatiels, love birds,
canaries, keets,) lived in buildings that had lots of screened windows
and they only thing the owners do in the winter is cover the windows
with plastic. They claim that these birds can adjust to the cold, but
don't like the drafts. On the other hand I know someone else who has
an open aviary and her tiels play in the snow (on the rare occassion
that it snows in Tucson)!
The large birds, Macaws, greys, amazons where all kept outside in large
chain link type avairies that had roofs on them to protect them from
the sun and rain. I was amazed to see these birds living outside with
all kinds of weather. Here in Tucson, we do get frosts, and it does
get REAL hot and all her birds managed to adjust.
I would think that S. Carolina has enough of a moderate temperature
that her birds would also adjust.
Maybe your friend should contact an aviary in the Carolina area and ask
them for suggestions.
