312.0. "Too late?" by SNDCSL::BLEIWAS (Look at the green one!) Mon Feb 05 1990 18:26

    People-

    Just a QUICK question...
I've had a 'tiel for about 4-5 years now, in the same cage
with a green parakeet. The 'keet died recently. Casey has
always been pretty tame (he loves to get his head scratched
and he loves to eat from human hands) but he loves all this
only from the cage. To get him out I need to grab a perch from
the cage in my hand and trick him into sitting on it while
I pull him out. I have him in my apartment which I share with
two roommates, so someone is always around. My question is, is
it too late to train him to come out on his own?

    Thanx

It's never too late to TRY. Since he seems partial to head scratchin'
only pet him for a second then hold out your hand and call him over.
Repeat this for about 5 min. every day at least twice day. And if this
does not work out try coaxing him out with his favorite treat. You
    should
realize that it could take a long time so be patient with him.

Stan- thanx for your suggestion - it tripped an 'alarm' in my mind
because he is EXTREMELY partial to Funyuns (you know, the
onion-flavored 'junk food' rings), and once I left one on the couch
near his cage and he jumped right out! Stupid me, I never thought
    of doing this regularly....

He's a great bird though, I wouldn't be anything BUT patient with
    'em!
