221.0. "Mixture of diff. Amazons ?" by EEMELI::KORVENRANTA () Thu Jul 20 1989 13:59

I have been following this conference half a year now, and
the more I read the writings about hand-fed baby parrots, the
more I would like to have one. BUT, there is one minor problem:
I live in Finland and it is no way to get a parrot here.
I mean leagally. Here are some big birds also for sale, but
they all have as far been wild catched.

I am lucky one: having a wild catched double yellow-headed Amazon.
And one of my friend has the same kind of blue-fronted Amazon.
We have been some times discussing about trying to breed those
big birds. It is not easy to find another double yellow-headed
from here, not easy to find a suitable one (sex, personality,...),
no avian vets available if something goes wrong,..........!

And so we have been thinking, that if our birds were of both sexes,
is it possible to get them breed ? Have you heard about mixtures
like blue-fronted and double yellow-headed ? Is it a foolish
    	idea anyway?

The only info I get here about those big birds is, of course,
this conference, and thanks to it (!) the magazines: Bird Talk and
American cage bird. And a few books which I have found somewhere
in Europe. So your experiences are very valuable for me and my
friend. Thanks for every input !

I have not heard of Amazon mixes. But as you have probably seen in
bird talk they mix cocatoos (Mullbrella ... sp?) Mullocan's and
Umbrella's. Plus I know of a person that has a Nanday and Blue Crown
pair that are currently sitting on some eggs. But I think there is a
move away from the hybreds to preserve the true species.
