| Carol,
It does sound like the mites that my budgie (Rita) had. Also look
at her legs and feet, does she have bumps or extra white scale on
them ? For mites there are lot of remedies, but the one I prefered
it a pyretherin(sp?) spray. The one I had was Norden from a dealer,
but I have since seen a spray with the same ingredients in Kmart.
I don't know the brand but it is in Kmart's bird section and call
a bird mite spray.
When I treated Rita for mites I sprayed it on the feathers and heavily
on the legs and feet. For the bumps on the side of the beak I soaked a
Q-tip in the liquid and dabbed it on. I am told the spray is non-toxic
to birds and that it doesn't hurt them to ingest it. The only danger is
if you get it in their eyes and even that is minimal as they close
their eyes when you spray them. You should also spray the cage and the
other birds to be sure of getting the mites. I applied the spray a
couple times a week for about a month.
If you have caught it early this could be you solution. When I got
Rita she had been infected for quite awhile and had respitory
infections also.
If you have trouble locating the spray let me know.

| Carol,
I bet it is mites. I have had 3 birds with scaley mites on feet and
or on beak areas (2 canaries and a budgie). The budgie started with
mites around his beak that looked like a beige growth. I referenced
a few books and then purchased an over the counter remedie sold
through most pet shops (Orna-Mite) I can't remember the name of
the company, but they put out many different medications. The box
is white with blue lettering I believe. It works great! You simply
apply it with a Q tip every other night for one week then twice a
week for the next week or so, and the problem disappears completely!
Sometimes the mites just appear on the beak or feet and sometimes
they spread. It makes the bird very uncomfortable and restless.
My male canary was so annoyed with it around his beak that he
kept rubbing his face against his perches and started to bleed all
over. It even attacks the eye lids and causes the eye to close up.
My canary got it on both eyes as well and in the morning couldn't
see. I would have to take him out and moisten his lids with a soft
cloth and warm water. But the medication did the trick and he
is recouping just fine. Best of luck!
Regards,
Denise
