196.0. "Observations from a novice keet owner. " by MAMIE::OLOUGHLIN () Fri Jun 16 1989 17:35

    I would like to introduce you to my friend "Larry". Yes, you
    guessed...Larry Bird. We, Deb and I purchased Larry about
    six months ago now. A purchase that was made by an uninformed
    person at that.  Me.

    Larry is a Fancy Green Keet. Now while I made a rather hasty
    purchase that has no bearing towards our dedication to his/her(?)
    health and happiness. Day one started with lots of quiet talk so
    as not to startle Larr and we have been working with Larr ever since.
    But Larr hasn't been working with us, 'least not much. S/he seems
    to run in moods.

    [Note: I tend to ramble. I wish I made an outline before starting.]

    Nothing is to good for Larr but we have a difficult time letting
    Larr know that the great stuff we got him is good for him and he'll
    like it. Before it's said in a reply, I'll say it now, "Patience".
    Yes I know. One thing is for sure, the mirror we gave him is his
    constant companion.

    In the past Larr got fresh seed with Super Preen sprinkled on top
    and a vitamin to be mixed with his water. (I can't remember the
    name but I know that it costs alot!) I tried to get him hooked
    on veg and fruit but he wouldn't bite. [Bad pun] Then I started
    getting him millet, he didn't touch it. Next was the Honey sticks
    and he ripped them apart. Made me feel better to see him get active.

    [Months pass]

    This spring Larr starts hanging around his mirror *all* the time.
    He seems to rest on his belly. The breathing seems heavy, I think.
    Tail looks like it's pumping, I think. Deb and I can't tell what's
    bad and what's normal. Larr is also losing feathers. The books
    that I've read tell me that when he molts he will be under stress
    and won't be too active. But I worry and off to the vet he goes.

    I went to _____?____ in Milford NH. He checked out Larr and told
    me that I've got a plump budgie. 39.9 grams. We talk about his
    diet and the things he does, the things we do, the training and
    so on. The visit was more of a lecture than anything else. The
    result was that he said that I had a slightly "pudgy budgie", but
    healthy. He also has me turn Larr away from seed to pellets.
    __Put_french_name_here_ brand pellets.

    In order to get Larr from seed to pellets I purchased some Avi-Cakes.
    Larry loves these cakes. Well, atleast we thought so. With the
    seed still in the cage, he would eat the Avi-cake first. One in
    the morning, one at dinner with us, but in the cage. Four days
    later Larry can spot a cake a mile away. Now we give him one in
    the morning and at night he has to come out and eat with us at the
    table. He does so with much coaxing.

    To speed up the program Larr gets one in the AM in the cage with
    no seed anymore. The reason is that Larr was eating all the seed
    in the Avi-Cake but not touching the pellets that are mixed in.
    At dinner Larr has one at the table with us. I have never seen
    the bird so active. Never... ever.

    We walk into the house and Larr jumps to a new perch to get a better
    look at us. The second Larr sees us start preparing food, he goes
    nuts. We let him out but now he's climbing all over us. Singing,
    chirping and yelling at us. We've never seen him so happy. (and
    hungry?) Larr dives from a high perch and lands on my arm. Jeeze,
    he never did that before. We put him back in his cage because we
    don't want him to get burnt or become part of a tossed salad. With
    the table set we put an Avi-Cake on the table, Deb sits down to
    protect our plates, Larr is raising complete hell in the cage,
    I let the door open and offer my finger, Larr jumps on while checking
    out his meal, before I can get him to the table he flys to finish
    the trip on his own. We sit and enjoy together.

    Larry is active during this time and happy. Then I fill his food
    cup with straight pellets. He can have an Avi-Cake tonight with
    us. I am sure that he'll get the idea. He does and now eats them
    as his main source of food. Hell, only source is more like it.
    He still won't touch anything else.

    Larry is back to the old way now. He hangs out at his mirror. Not
    very active. HE DOESN'T SCREAM FOR AVI-CAKES ANYMORE!!! We can't
    get him to the table anymore but we can get him to his outside perch
    with an Avi-Cake.

    He was bobbing his head and crawling all over us two weeks ago.
    From reading this notesfile I may have had a bird who was sexually
    active. Maybe. Maybe he eats too much. Maybe.

    ** Corrective Action **

    Larr will now only have food between 6:00 - 8:00 in the morning
    but plenty of vitamin fortified water.

    At dinner, Larr will have food offered first with us at the table,
    then in his cage if he won't come out. This will between 6:00 and
    8:00. (If he doesn't like us that day he can wait 'til we're done.)

    After this routine has been established, he will get a new cage.
    A bigger one with an Apple branch inside and toys.

    Then he will lose his mirror.

    If he goes into too deep a depression, either he'll get his mirror
    back or he'll get a buddy.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    We want our friend back!
    Rick.
    PS. I once tried to call Jean but couldn't ever get an answer.
        If we do get him a buddy, he must be of the best breeding
        and health!   Aren't we snobs!!!
    I know Jean has budgies available for adoption, and I will probably
    see her next Wednesday. Why don't you send me your home phone number
    and I will give it to her. She usually has a answering machine on
    here phone, you could try her over the weekend.
It sounds like you are doing the right things, but the first thing I
    would have done is get rid of the mirror. Also Super Preen on the
    food and other Vitamins in the water could be overdueing it. I bought
    a nice Hagen parakeet cage at the Fair in Auburn.
196.2A couple of questions please.WOODRO::OLOUGHLINMon Jun 19 1989 15:0231
    Every Friday night Larr doesn't know who we are.  Every Sunday night
    he's our best friend.  I suppose it's because I would let him have
    his mirror over the week while we are at work.  Again, I want a
    happy budgie so if he *needs* his mirror for companionship, he can
    have it.
    Over the weekend he did more scoot'en around than ever.  Only partly
    moody.
    I used the Super Preen on his seed.  The pellets do not need it.
    So says the vet.  I'll give him some broccoli tonight and every
    night for now on.
    The plan has been modified a bit.
    He has food in the AM, 6-8.  Then once we get home he can have a
    healthy new food in his little treat feeding dish.  On one side he
    will have a piece of fruit, the other side will be a vegetable. The
    food will stay in the cage for an hour or until Deb and I are ready
    for dinner.  Then Larr can come out and have his meal with us.
    If he's hungry and doesn't want to wait he'll have to get used to
    this new and strange stuff we offer him.
    Another question.  I want a larger cage for him but I don't care
    for the cages I've seen.  Anyone have a catalog I can look at?
    Also,  what toys have you seen that keep a budgie happy?
    Rick.
    HI,
    Debbies Petland in Chelmsford has a large assorment of cages but they
    tend to be a little expensive. There is a pet supply store in
    Chelmsford that I stop at now and then but don't know the name that has
    a good assortment. I got a nice big cage from a Flea Market, and alway
    look for more.
    My budgies like the inter-locked colored rings, the litte peguins,
    small linked chains, key chains, Balsa wood blocks and the color
    plastic balls like the one for cats with a bell in them. They also
    have little plastic clowns that they like to play with and sometimes
    feed.
    Doug
196.4But where would I get...WOODRO::OLOUGHLINMon Jun 19 1989 16:2915
    Re -1.
    Funny, I just put those rings in yesterday.
    Cages. I don't really like any of them.   I would very much like
    to make one myself.  24 wide, 24 deep and 36 high.   Some sort of
    heating pad built in below to maintain winter temp. (We have a cold
    house with *ELECTRIC* heat. Mega-bucks thanks to Seabrook.)  With
    the heat on some sort of control I'd also want the Vita-light on
    a timer.   Lot-o-room with lots of toys.
    Rick.
196.5I'd still like to see Jean's Aviary!WOODRO::OLOUGHLINThu Jul 20 1989 16:5334
     Well it's been awhile since I've wrote anything.  That's because
     evrythings been fine. (Almost.)
     I tossed the mirror.  Larr is a happier bird for it.  No doubt
     about it.  No so moody, much more active.
     He gets misted every morning and he does NOT like it.  He sees
     me walk over and he checks for the little mist bottle.  He's also
     wise to me hiding it behind my back.  If he can't see both my hands
     in the morning off he goes to the other room.   I win in the end,
     after either talking to him for five minutes or misting him where
     ever he lands.
     The new __insert_french_name_ pellets are great.  He now likes
     them and he seems the better for it.  He has an Avicake for dinner
     with us at 6 or 7:00.   I still can't get bird brain to eat vegetables
     or fruit.  But I'll keep up the good fight.  Someday he'll come
     around.
     I'm still unhappy about the cage.  I really would like to build
     something for him.  Any cage builders out there?
     Rick.
     PS.
         Since the base note we've decided not to get another keet.
         He does indeed seem happy and we would like to maintain the
         bond we now have with our friend.  I am not convinced at all
         that two will bond considering we both work 8-5.   Meaning
         not too much time together.
    In .4 you mentioned a cage 24Lx24Wx36H.  You can build one for about
    $35 out of 1"x1/2" galvanized wire mesh, complete with a 2" deep
    galvanized slide-out tray for the bottom.  You can make a bunch of
    perches of different sizes from hardwood dowels, or, better yet, use a
    likely branch from a live, unsprayed apple tree.  If you're interested,
    I can work out plans and a materials list.  It takes about 4 hours to
    build one.  Tools required are wire cutters, a file, a pair of needle-
    nosed pliers, and a pair of special pliers (inexpensive, and relatively
    easy to find).
    You're on your own for a heater, although I suspect a good heating pad
    might do the trick if you can keep your budgie from chewing on it.
    See note #116 about Bird CAge Building - I inquired about this a
    few months ago
    I haven't gotten around to building mine yet, so I cannot offer
    first hand advice yet.
196.8I'll take this to the cage note.MAMIE::OLOUGHLINMon Jul 24 1989 16:1015
      The heating pad, or rather, the chosen heating source, would be
    under the bottom of the pull out pan.  'Least that's the way I was
    thinking about doing it.
      I was thinking about Lexan(tm) for the bottom.  Does anyone know
    where I can have it formed?  That with a galvanized tray would be
    a nice design.
      Hmmmmm, what about the sides? Wood?   Or bend the wire mesh to
    a square?
196.9Update time. Plus need a vet. WILKIE::OLOUGHLINWed Apr 04 1990 21:0822
       After a loooong time, this past Monday night, while I was reading
    the paper at the kitchen table, Larry flew over and landed on my
    shoulder.
       It was the first time he had ever done that and it clearly freaked
    him out.  As soon as he realized what he had done he took off.
       Almost a year later, here's the status.
       Larr will not eat veggies or fruit.  No way.  Never will.
       At present he is molting and it is also time to take him to the vet
    for his toenails/beak trimming/ 10,000 mile check up.   Would you
    please give a referal?   I live in the Nashua area.  Without violating
    the rules of the conferance...  I will not go to the vet in Milford,
    next door to McDonalds.
       Rick.
