186.0. "Introducing children to birds and vice-versa" by TIDES::WOLOCHOWICZ (NANCE) Tue May 30 1989 21:12

For the past three years its been just me and two peach-faced
lovebirds. This will soon change as I move to a new location and
gain a husband and two step-children.
The kids are 5 and 6 years old. What is the best way to introduce
the kids to the birds and the birds to the kids? The kids tend
to run over to the cage and this scares the birds. The kids are
normal (i.e. they get loud - and I'm wondering how my birds will
adjust), and they tend to want to pet the birds.
The birds do not like to be touched.
How can I ease the kids and the birds into this transition (and
    still maintain my sanity?) ;^)))

Thanks for any comments or suggestions you can provide.

    Nance,
Boy can I identify with your situation my boyfriend and I have
four birds and three kids that come over each weekend. We have gently
told the kids that you can not run to the birds but walk real
quietly so that they don't frighten them (birds) then we asked them
if they (kids) liked people scaring them? Sorta made them feel how the
    birds must feel.

As for gently easing the both together I can only suggest the same
time every night bring the cage down so the birds and the kids can
see each other eye to eye, also if the birds have a favorite treat,
maybe alternate between you and the kids giving the birds their treat
This way the birds see that the kids mean no harm and the kids get
to learn more about the birds.

Mike's kids are great even the 4r year old. he knows enough that
if he puts his fingers in the age ouch! and they know that the birds
have senstive ears and loud noises hurt them, but like anything
it takes time and gentle reminders.

Good Luck in your new household and new life

Have you thought about the possibility of getting the kids their
own birds. Maybe a couple of tame budgies? It may help to divert
their attention away from the birds that aren't used to them. You
will still have to be moderator and teacher until they the kids
really understand how to care for and handle birds but the fact
that they have birds that LIKE them may do wonders.
