Hi! We have two parakeets - both of which have extremely long nails - We bought the sandpaper perch covers - and have put them in the cage. I am wondering if anyone has purchased the terra-cotta perches I see advertised in Bird Talk. According to the write-up, they are excellent for trimming the nails - but expensive. I want to do everything I can do to avoid bringing my darlings somewhere to have them clipped. Thanks for any advice you can give me. Carol

We clip the birds ourselves. We watched the shop do it and asked questions explaining that we want to do it ourselves from then on and they were realy great. Explained each step not much to it, and said in case we hit a vain to have a jar of qik stop and cotton handy. We found that if one hods the bird and the other clips the birds aren't as panicky, and we get throught it faster. Lise | |||||

I know a long time has elapsed since the original note, but we have been using terra cotta perches for several years. I like them a lot and the vet says they are great. We have never had to trim their beaks or toenails (two parakeets). Be careful when cleaning/moving them. I inadvertently broke one in half!! It may be possible to repair or make two half perches from it. |
