177.0. "Nightime Screeching" by WITNES::HANNULA (Well, you see, I have this cat.......) Fri May 19 1989 12:47

I've had my 2 cockatiels for almomst 3 years now, and for the most
part they have been wonderful pets. In our current living situation,
Hansel and Gretel cage is kept in our bedroom, since we also have
4 cats and the bedroom is the only room with a door. At night,
I have alwyas covered H&G's cage - otherwise at the stroke of dawn
they would sing wake up songs to me. Well, for teh past week, Hansel
has decided that when I put the blanket over his cage at night,
that is the cue for him to start screeching. Hansel has never really
been a screecher. Always been vocal, but not screechy. I try to
keep them on a pretty regular schedule - if I'm staying up late,
I will go put H&G to sleep anyway. The only thing that really differs
in their schedule is that they have to sleep a little late on weekends.

Any ideas on what this recent screeching is? My patience is starting
    to wear a little thin.

177.1Try a treatEBBV01::STAATSFri May 19 1989 16:2815
I know what your going thru, I have a conure that hated to go to
bed at night. He goes into his cage just fine but he used to cry
or scream when I covered him. What I started to do was give him a
treat when I put the cover on, usualy something that takes him a
little while to eat (peanuts, a couple of rasins, half a dozen sunflower
seeds...etc) that way he was to busy to be bothered with screaming.
Now the problem is, if it starts to get late he will go into his
cage sit in front of the spot where I put his special treat dish
and scream at me that it's bed time ( he doesn't actualy say the
words but his meaning is LOUD and clear).

Good Luck from Kris and Woody

I wish my cockies would screech. The two of them just sit there
all day like a stain and make no noise at all. I have to check
them every now and then to see if they are alive. I pick both of
them up every morning and talk to them, put them on my shoulder
and walk around with them but all they want to do is sit on top
of thier cage like stains.... These are the two most boring birds
I have ever seen in my life.

    But I still love them......

    Re .2

    Steve, want to trade cockies? ;'}

Over the weekend the problem seems to have gotten worse. We got
around to taking all the storm windows off and the screens in the
windows. Meaning we get to sleep with the windows open. Hansel
hears the birds chirping outside at 4:00 AM and decides that it's
time to join in. Last night we tried to go to bed at 11:00. Hansel
screeched until midnight. Then was up at 4:00 and chirped until
I finally got up at 5:00 and uncovered him.

I'm going to try .1 suggestion of giving them treats at night.
If that doesn't work I might try putting them to bed about an hour
before I want to go to bed - do you think that would work.

Want one of mine???? They BOTH sit and scream! In stereo!
Actually, you can have both! You'd sure change your mind, believe
me. I'm convinced that they're bound and determined to drive my
husband and I OUT of the house!
