134.0. "Is saving droppings unusual...??" by MPGS::TAI (are we having fun yet??) Thu Mar 02 1989 19:50

    Is this unusual...?
My yellow nape amazon, Piedy - who still hates me and LOVES my
SO, saves his droppings. (Piedy's not really mine anymore...I
gave him to my SO. He still breaks skin when he bites me, and
seems as if he always will...[RE: an earlier note] he hasn't
progressed much with me 8^{ )

I think it's common/normal for birds to save their droppings
overnight, and wait till morning. But on many occasions my SO
and I have noticed that if we come back from work, talk to him
for a few minutes and then go out on errands or something...
right after we come home he lets go a "morning-size" dropping.
He saved his droppings until we got home. He's even done this
occasionally while we're at work. He certainly has a clean cage
    until we get home.

He doesn't do this when he's out and playing on the gym.
Also, it's not the first thing he does in the morning either.
Sometimes he waits awhile before he goes i.e., eat a little
    bit.

I took him to the Dr. McMillan last month and she said that he
    was extremely healthy.

Does anybody else's bird do this?

    Hi,

I have given up trying to figure out these feathered friends. My
orange wing amazon has strange rituals like this too. He will
always pass a large one in the morning but I have seen many birds
save it as you say through the night. Flash will usually drop one
as soon as he is taken out of the cage. This is very consistent
and I haven't figured out what triggers this. He will also prefer
to hang it over the side at let it go and he is also very consistent
with hitting the door when he does this. Flash will also make a
certain sound as he is doing this. It looks to me that your Nape
has some unique habits as well. The habits that your Nape displays
may make him a good candidate for potty training. What a joy that
would be. I don't think your bird has a problem however. Maybe
he is just excited to see you and your SO.
