114.0. "The Grand Eclectus Parrot" by CSC32::K_WORKMAN (Hand picked by Juan Valdez) Tue Feb 07 1989 13:57

Another new edition... Yes I did say that I wouldn't get another
big bird, but things are going so well with my Grey and my
    Cockatoo, I couldn't resist.

Ever seen a Grand Eclectus? Their feathers are almost like hair
and they are almost a flourescent green with blue wings and red
around their shoulders along with alot of yellow (just the males).
The females are all red with purple tummys and the same quality
of feathers. For along time the females were thought to be a different
species. The bird I'm getting is a male. He is about 3 months old
and will be coming home in about two weeks. He's not quite weaned
yet. I've been visiting him regularly and he is something! He
likes to be rocked to sleep.

The Eclectus have wide beeks across the front but seem thiner than
the Grey and the Cockatoo even though they are such big birds.
The males have light upper beeks and dark lower beeks. The Grand
is the largest of the Eclectus and these birds are native to New
Guinea. This baby I'm getting seems to be a real lover, but I was
told that the Eclectus can go either way from being the kind of
bird that enjoys doing things on his own to being real clingy like
cockatoo's. I think this baby is gonna be on the cockatoo end.
This is the second clutch the breeders have had. They kept a male
from the first clutch, his name is Kermit and he talks like a Grey!

If you can make it to a show in your area, go look at one of these
birds. They are very distinct looking. The females are pretty
rare but are absolutely gorgeous! Any body had any experience
with an Eclectus? I would love to here from you!

114.2Eclectus are beautiful!!!!!WARLRD::SIMPSONTue Feb 07 1989 15:2911
    Hello.

Yes I have seen a Grand Eclectus. They really are beautiful.
My sister-in-law has 5 of them. She has 3 females and 2 males.
I believe that she plans to breed them when they are all adults.
She got most of them as babies and hand fed them.

    Congratulations.

    re:1

I think if I counted I would probably scare myself and my
    husband too!

    re:2

The breeder where I'm getting him is trying despirately to
aquire a non related female. Does your sister-in-law want
to sell one of the females? They are apparantly really hard
    to come by.

My ownly problem now is naming him! Anyone got any ideas?
We should start a topic on bird names. I'm the worlds
worst at naming things. He looks like a Kermit but that
    name is allready taken.....

If he looks like Kermit, how about the name of the little muppet
frog, I think its Robin ? Or froggy ? Worst case is after you
have had him a while he will pick he own name by his behaviour.
Take your time as he is going to be with you for a long time.

    Good luck

    Karen,

I doubt that my sister-in-law would sell at this point. Her birds
are like her children, but if she mentions an interest in selling,
I'll let you know. She has many feathered friends as it sounds
like you do. I believe her last count was 15, all parrots.

Oh by the way, what about Fozzie for a name?
You know, the muppet bear? I'm not sure I'm spelling it right.

    Good luck.

My friend has a hand-fed male. He is a lot of fun. The colors are
absolutely wonderful. (My wife almost let me get another bird when she
    saw it!).

Whats the deal with spouses and buying more birds! In my house
its like pulling teeth! But he (my husband) has grown to love
them all, he just acts epileptic when I mention buying another.

The trick in my house is to mention diapers! Then buying another
bird gets much more appealing... hahahaha
114.8pretty, but expensive.....ENGINE::JACOBSONWed Feb 08 1989 19:344
Aren't these birds expensive? I was reading somewhere that
they run around $3K each. Is this correct?

    Karl......
114.9About half that....CSC32::K_WORKMANHand picked by Juan ValdezWed Feb 08 1989 20:2018
Phew... that is too much. I was talking with the breeder yesterday
about pricing and how CO seems to be a little on the cheap side,
but she said that the males are going from (I think I'm remembering
this correctly) 1400.00 to 1800.00 and the females are going from
1800.00 to 2500.00+ on the average for the U.S. I got my bird for
200.00 less than she normally charges because I've purchased other
birds from her. Maybe the price you are seeing is for a female?
The females are absolutely beautiful. They look like BIG Lori's
    with wide beeks kindof...

You can always get one cheaper if you don't want a hand-fed. I
remember something about them lowering the import quota on these
guys... but can't remember for sure. Maybe this is why the prices
seem kinda high. She (the breeder) has been looking around the
country for proven pairs and finds the pricing to be widely
    varied.

Re: a few back - on buying Eclectus (Eclecti??)

A woman I know has two breeding pairs - a Grand (?) and a Red-Sided. She may
have some babies (hand-fed) ready, I haven't seen her in a while. If there's
interest, I can check it out and post her number here. Note, however, that
she's located in Portola Valley, CA (6 miles from DEC/Palo Alto).

    I'm in CA.

Yes, pricing is left to the gods most of the time. Chris charges
1200 normally, but I got him for 1000.00. It seems that in FL
and certain places across the east and even in CA you find the
prices to be considerably higher as indicated in an earlier
entry. She gets price lists from all over to stay up with
the current market... but finds HUGE variations from state to state.

    Re:-2

I will ask Chris. She currently has two breeder pairs of the Grand's
and has one male from one of the pairs first clutch. She gets her
birds from all over the country so I don't think CA would be a
problem. She just had a proven pair of BARE-EYEDs shipped from
    FL.
