87.0. "Vacation planning / bird-sitter recomendations" by BOHR::CASSONE (Dom Cassone MRO4-3/C17 DTN 297-3038) Wed Jan 04 1989 14:16

    This cold spell is a perfect time to start planning our late spring
    vacation!!! But, before we can make concrete plans, we need to find
    someplace where Zackery (our Scarlet Macaw) can stay and have his
    vacation.

    So, this note is for any suggestions for bird-sitters in the MA/NH
    area. We, of course, want to be sure that Zack is properly taken care
    of and that the people who take care of him know what they are getting
    into when they agree to bird-sit a Macaw who is quite opinionated and
    often needs to be gently reminded that he is not the boss, but at the
    same time, can be as huggable as a teddy bear.

    Thanks for your help,
    Dom & Zack

    Not in your area, but a good place to put this:

    For Colorado folks, there is a place called BIRD CALLS. These folks
    are experienced bird sitters. The nice thing about this company
    is that they take care of your birds in YOUR HOME while you are
    gone. They usually come once or twice (if you prefer) a day and
    give your bird his normal diet, excerise (if you want) and what
    ever else you would have them do. If you have other animals at
    home, they will take care of them also. They have a vet on call
    24 hours a day, in the event your bird needs medical attention
    while you are away.

    They can also be called to your home to do regular wing, beak and
    nail trims!

    Their number is a Denver one, but they service all over Colorado

87.2Tropic Isle3D::PIERCEWed Jan 04 1989 19:2212

    Tropic Isle takes care of birds for folks on vacation they are in
    framingham Mass on RT 9 (if you need more infor let me know). I
    would suggust Pet Land they do not know what they are doing with
    anything over there..also the Westboro pet store sits for birds
    (I dont remember the name *sorry*) and just about any pet store
    will sit for birds..so give them a call and then type another note
    and see what was all hear in Bird land think of the store.

    Good Luck

    Weetahmo Vetinary Hospital in Rowley will board him for you. She
    is an avian vet, and he is a breeder -- he's the "father" of my
    two babies. They have a Macaw, an African Grey, an Amazon, and
    90 assorted other birds. I have seen the care and attention birds
    staying there receive -- mine will certainly go there when I go
    on vacation. I like the idea that they will get attention, maintain
    their normal diet, and there is a vet there is there were any problems.
     They live there, so there is someone around 24 hours.

87.4The PC's lonely, Get another bird down there!GORGE::QAR$ASSIGNERThu Jan 05 1989 16:0514
    Hi Dom and Zach!

    If you cannot find a vet, or are uncomfortable boarding at the vets,
    call me at home! 603/880-8984. However, I'd be VERY skeptical
    about boarding at a pet store...

    You haved no idea what is coming into the store on peoples shoes,
    what new birds have just come into the store. Even stores that
    buy from Quarantine stations still have a better than outside chance
    of tempting fate...The healty birds get stressed and some dorment
    little affliction rears it's ugly head...and there you go!

87.5BOSHOG::STRIFEbut for.....i wouldn't be me.Thu Jan 19 1989 15:078
    I travel quite abit so have also needed to look for bird sitters
    for my cockatiels. The pet store in Westboro (the one that's been
    there awhile) is Consumer Pets. They told me that they no longer
    board birds. There's a new pet store in Julio's Plaza that sells
    birds but I haven't asked if the board them.

    As for Tropic Isle - I guess I'd be a littel bit nervous about
    boarding with them, mostly because they sold me a sick bird.

87.7Edinburgh Holiday home ?MUNCSS::BURKETue Jan 31 1989 13:2612
    This could be a good topic for connecting up bird-sitters.

    As all of you know, peace of mind when on holiday is when you know
    that it is a bird-person looking after the 'family'. Personally,
    I think almost any animal lover could look after our two Cockatiels.
    However, it's a different story with our two Greys. We just couldn't
    lodge them with someone with no parrot experience.

    So: Anyone in the Edinburgh (Scotland) area who could handle
    		two Greys ? We would be delighted to reciprocate.

87.8bird sitter wanted...LUDWIG::RCONWAYThu Oct 19 1989 13:446
    Does anyone know of a bird sitter in the Hudson/Marlboro area?
    I will be leaving for vacation in mid november.
    I have a macaw and I just don't want to leave him with anyone...
    If anyone has any info or can make any suggestions.....thanks

87.9Try Pet SErve Plus in Sudbury MATLE::HOVEYThu Oct 19 1989 20:227
    We use Pet Serve Plus in Sudbury. 508 443-0270. He charges $11
    for our two Cockatoos per day. He also brings the mail in and
    rotates the lights etc etc. We will also vacuum around the cage
    (if you ask him nicely).

    Good luck.

87.10Mad.....EUCLID::JACOBSONMon Oct 23 1989 11:298
    I went with Pet Serve Plus and hated him. He had no experience with
    birds. He did vacuum around the cage. Big deal.... I told him to
    give the birds MSA, Neckton-S, and plunty of greens and he really
    didn't do it............oh well........Don't go with this guy!!!!!

    You have to go with a bird sitter, not a dog and cat sitter......

87.13Good Pet Sitter - Worc, MAISTG::ZIESEMANNTue May 15 1990 14:0921
	I was recently away from home for a week and used a pet sitting
	service for the first time. I was very impressed and pleased
	with these people. I have two dogs and two birds. They came
	to my house three times a day, fed everybody, took the dogs for
	walks and played with them...they let the birds out and talked and
	played with them. They will do all the other house sitting type
	things (bring in the mail, turn lights on and off, etc). This is
	a fairly new business in the Worcester, MA area and I would
	definitely recommend them.

	PS...I also felt their charges were quite reasonable for the
	     service they provided.

87.16Birdsitter wanted... swap favors?CSSE32::SMITHReality, just a visible imagination?Mon Jul 22 1991 11:3213
Anyone willing to swap birdsitting time? Our friend that usually watches Jenny
is on vacation at the same time this year.

Jenny is a red lored, very tame and well mannered. We have had Jenny for 3
years and are very good with birds (had 2 tiels before Jenny).

If I can't find someone to swap time can someone suggest a sitter in the
southern NH area.

Cheers,

...Ed
