52.0. "Lets talk about Feet" by CSC32::K_WORKMAN (P.I.A.S.O.M.) Mon Nov 14 1988 13:46

    HowDy...

    I bought a book this weekend called BIRD DISEASES. This is a great
    book and VERY informative, however, if you can't stand the site
    of really gross things then don't buy this one.

    I was hoping that this book would have some information on feet.
    It did but focused on deformaties and deficencies.

    Recently I have noticed that my Grey's left foot has turned a darker
    color than the right foot. This is the foot that he eats with which
    may or may not have anything to do with it. I also noticed that
    where the toe-nail grows out it has a slightly orange color to it.
    I soaked his foot in some warm water and this seemed to lighten
    the foot up a little. The normal foot is grey with white around
    the scales. The un-normal foot is dark grey for the scales and
    light grey around them. I have felt all the way up and down each
    toe and up his leg and there is no pain at all. The foot is the
    same temperature as the other one also.

    Anybody have some insight on this? The book didn't mention anything
    at all about this and the book does seem pretty complete but.....
    SHOULD I BE WORRIED????

    Thanks..

    As a side note.. This book has pictures of items removed from a
    birds stomach (ie things he swallowed around the house). It included
    things like a key, a dart tip, the tip of a ball point pin to name
    a few. I'm sure the key must have been swallowed by a larger bird but
    still, I am going to take more care in leaving things around that
    my bird might eat!! A DART! phew...

52.1I have that book too!FREKE::HUTCHINSFeathered Obsessions AviaryMon Nov 14 1988 15:198
    Hi Karen!

    It sounds like the Turd Bird stubbed his foot on something or misjudged
    a perch maybe. I think Id check with my vet on this one! It could
    well just be bruised...but better be safe not sorry and just have
    it checked out....

52.2I'll give him a call!CSC32::K_WORKMANP.I.A.S.O.M.Mon Nov 14 1988 15:257
    Thanks Jean!

    I would have called the VET sooner but he just wasn't in any kind
    of pain. I will call the Dr.. Maybe I can talk with him before
    I bring him in. I will let you know!

    Is it possible the foot is a different color due to it being more
    exposed to the oils in the feed and softer of sorts? Sorta like
    if you rubbed hand lotion on one hand and not the other you would
    see a color difference. This may not even be close to what really
    has caused the dif but it was the first thought I had when you said
    that it was the same foot used for eating.

52.4Let it Snow?CSC32::K_WORKMANP.I.A.S.O.M.Tue Nov 15 1988 12:3911
    Yeah, thats what I first thought. I made an appointment with the
    Vet anyway for today at 4:30 but... IT'S SNOWING! And I think I
    will cancel because him being exposed to this cold (just walking
    from the car into the office with lots of covers on the cage could
    still do it) is more risky I feel! His foot does look better today
    but I will still take him in, just NOT TODAY! It doesn't hurt him
    at all which must be a good sign. The only thing the Vet said on
    the phone was that it could be a circulatory problem. I have been
    constantly checking his foot and it is just as warm as the other.

    Thanks again!
52.5More on the footCSC32::K_WORKMANP.I.A.S.O.M.Tue Nov 22 1988 13:038
    The Dr. said that it could very well be oils in the food. He said
    there are no signs of injury and took a little skin test and
    confirmed that there is no fungus or anything on his foot. He
    explained that in the case of some kind of skin disorder the bird
    would most likely have made it worse by picking or chewing at the
    foot.

    Better safe than sorry....
52.6What's a Gort? I think I know! 8^}SQUEKE::HUTCHINSFeathered Obsessions AviaryTue Nov 22 1988 15:058
    Well, looks like "Little -j" called that right on the money -- huh!
    I'm glad that's all it was! And, it makes sense too! I have been
    watching Fred's feet! So far, they are the same color!

    And, thanks for updating us on the the vet trip! Nothing worse
    than wondering after the fact!
