47.0. "Discovery Channel" by AKOV13::LAJEUNESSE () Wed Nov 09 1988 12:24

    For those of you that have cable there is a program on tonight called
    "Parrots of the World" on the Discovery Channel. It starts at 10:00PM
    and it's channel 24 in Marlboro. It looks like it will be interesting.

47.1Oh YES Do watch this!CSC32::K_WORKMANP.I.A.S.O.M.Wed Nov 09 1988 13:409
    Yes this is a great program. This is a series. So far in Colorado
    they have had the one on Cockatoo's, Lorikeets and there was one
    on Budgregars (spell?.. you know budgies). I have on tape the first
    two. Are Budgies considered small parrots or maybe this one wasn't
    under the same program, but it was on the same channel (Discovery)
    and in the same format. Anyway, don't miss this because you learn
    alot about how your birds actually live in the wild...

    Enjoy!

    Could I impose on someone in the Marlboro area to tape this show
    for me? I am using my VCR to tape something else tonight and my
    TV can not receive the cable channel that the Discovery Channel
    is on. I only want to borrow the tape, but will be glad to buy
    it if necessary. Please call me at DTN 297-3038 or send me mail
    at BOHR::CASSONE if you can help me out.

    Thanks,
    Dom

    PS Does anyone know what the topic is for this episode?
47.3Keets, Parrots and What's a Macaw?FREKE::HUTCHINSFeathered Obsessions AviaryWed Nov 09 1988 18:0014
    Hi Karen....

    Budgies..Budgierigar...(sp?) is a parakeet. Parrots an parakeets
    and parrakeets are all psittacines, but a 'keet has a small head
    and hook bill with a slender body. Parrots are more robust, stocky,
    larger hooked bills and have short stubby tails!

    A love bird is a parrot....the quaker is a parrakeet! Conures are
    also keets....but, what's a macaw??? The exception to the rule???

    Does this help?

47.6Rosella's!CSC32::K_WORKMANP.I.A.S.O.M.Thu Nov 10 1988 13:5211
    I watched it at 8:00 here in Colorado. I remembered now that the
    "LAND OF PARROTS" is Australia. They are concentrating this program
    strictly to native birds. Last nights program was on Rosella's
    and Grass Parrots. It was great! The bad part is when the
    Aviculturalist pulls all those Stuffed (and dead) birds to show us
    feather markings out of his drawer! The Pale-Headed Rosella is
    a gorgeous bird... Hum... Maybe this will be my next addition.

    Anyway, if your in Colorado, I have these on tape for you to borrow.

    Bye!

    I copied it and you are welcome to review it. Its a good series.
    I'll be happy to let you borrow the tape but I will need it back.
    I plan on taping all of them. I missed the first two and I'm hoping
    they will rerun them.

    I just finished reading the December issue of Bird Talk last night, one
    day to late. The very last article in it mentioned this series on the
    Discovery channel.

    The last in the series was on Parakeets and Budgies, too bad it was on
    10:00 pm Nov 15.

    Oh Well! hopefully they will come around again.

    Per BT, They are available for $39.95 for each hourly segment or around
    $250 for the set of 7.

    Hi Doug,

    I watched one of them last night. I taped it but I missed about
    10 minutes of it. The series, at least the programs that I have
    see have been on Grass Parakeets. Its been very interesting although
    I was hoping that they would eventually move into larger parrots.
