3244.0. "ADA compiler for NT ?" by NNTPD::"forissier@taec.enet.dec.com" (Jerome Forissier) Thu May 29 1997 06:12

I am about to port an application from Digital Unix/Alpha to NT. The main part
is written in ADA 83 and mostly system-independant, and there is a smaller
system-dependant part in C++.

Does someone know of a 'good' ADA compiler for NT (either Alpha or Intel)
available now ?
It seems that Digital recommends Rational Corp. products, but Rational Apex
ADA
for NT is still beta and due to be released in August '97. And Rational
VADSself
compiler seems to be 'not stable enough' for porting a major application.

I will appreciate advice from people who had to deal with the same problem.

Jerome.

3244.1Places to look? Has anyone *really* done this yet?BBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Thu May 29 1997 11:3523
    I haven't done this myself, but I'm working with customers looking at
    unusual Ada platforms (and I think NT and Ada are an unusual
    combination).

    An AltaVista search for "Ada compiler" and "windows NT" comes up with
    the usual suspects. You already eliminated Rational, there are others.

    There's (for example) Greenhills. I'm not sure they are still in the
    game, last I hear they were finding Ada a lot harder than other
    languages.

    There's GNAT (GNU Ada Toolkit) for ADA 95 - for free, but with
    commercial support via Ada Core Technologies in France. Alpha UNIX and
    Alpha OpenVMS today, Alpha NT Q297 (says www.act.com). Plus Intel Win32
    today.

    I suspect a search of the back pages of (e.g.) Byte might also find
    some names not on the Web.

    Anybody got first hand experience of doing this ?

    regards
    john
