3236.0. "Need to move system disk ??'s" by OHFSS1::MALOTT (Lost in a Maze of DecNis') Thu May 08 1997 10:05

I have a customer I am about to assist in reconfiguring their NT Alpha
2100A system. they have 2 SW internal shelves that they wish to have
fully populated with 4 Gig drives all on single buses within the
shelves. Each shelf will then have an individual RAID 5 set consisting
of all 7 members, one as a hot spare.

Sounds easy, but my problem is that their current system disk resides
in one of these shelves. Therefore, I need to 'move' the system disk
    to an internal drive bay.

My plan is to back up the current system disk (partitioned into 'c'
and 'd' drives) using NT backup with 'Backup the Local Registry'
    selected.

Then, I'll remove the current system disk (and save it aside), address
the new disk as drive 0 and install NT on it using the same partition
sizes. and types. Then I'll restore the backup onto this new system
    disk and reboot.

Does this plan sound correct? Can anyone give me any pointers on other
    ways to accomplish this task?

    Any/all feedback appreciated...

    Best Regards,

    John Malott

Theoretically, you should just be able to move the disk and change the ARC boot
information. Everything that matters should work of %SystemRoot% rather than a
specific drive letter for the purposes of getting the system booted.

You'll probably have to use Disk Administrator to change drive letters along the
way.

I strongly suggest you do a trial run on another system first.

    Hi,

On Alpha NT, you can modify the boot information and select the
specific SCSI controller id, disk id to a new disk in the internal
drive bay and the system can boot from that disk. So just copy the
whole disk (including hidden files etc) into the internal disk.

Re: .1, In this case moving the disk won't help. It must be a
physically new disk since the new location will not be a SW shelf slot,
    but an internal drive bay.

Re: .2, How can I then be certain that the registry has been backed up
    as well?

You say this is a 2100? They only come with SW bays - no internal
bays for hard drives. I have moved SW bricks around alot in 2100s.
Modify the boot info and take off.
