3180.0. "COMPACT utility - support compression on A/NT?" by CLT::KIDS::NESCHKE () Tue Jan 28 1997 14:13

I have a question (or 2) concerning file compression on Alpha NT Systems.

Why does the command "compact/c" run on Alpha NT system in a DOS window
give the error message: "The file system does not support compression."

Why is there a compact utility provided on Alpha NT if the file system
doesn't support the compression? Or is there a setting that can be made to
the file system so that it does support compression?

Or to make the question moot, what do other products use to compress their
product in order to fit on one floppy? And do they include the uncompress
utility on the kit?

    Joanne,

Is the file system on which you are attempting the COMPACT command
NTFS or FAT. Compression is not supported on FAT partitions. See
    COMPACT /?.

If you wish to use NTFS, you may convert the file system from FAT using
the CONVERT command. See CONVERT /?.

There are many standard (and generic) forms of compression and some
that are part of installation software packages. It depends on what
    you want to do.

If you have general Windows NT questions, DECWET::WINDOWS-NT would be a
better place. Your last question regarding product packaging is
    probably okay here.

    Cheers,
