126.0. "Mt Washington Climb to the Clouds - 1997" by RHETT::BURDEN (A bear in his natural habitat) Thu Apr 17 1997 13:58

This year's race will be held on June 27, 28 and 29. The actual race will be
on Sunday June 29th from 10:00 a.m. to around 3:00 p.m. There is a web
site for the event at:

www.mt-washington.com/cttcabout.html

I've also managed to find a ride for this year's race so we'll be heading north
in late June!

I talked to the organizer of the event and they will be broadcasting the
event live on the web. As it gets closer I'll get more details and post
them here.

There are numerous campgrounds nearby and they will allow camping (limited
facilities) at the base of the mountain this year. Sign in here if you
plan to attend.

I'll be there as ham/flagger. Last year I shot live video down from
checkpoint 1 on Friday, checkpoint 24 Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was
ok but Sunday we were in the clouds, hence we ran half way.

I checked on having Diane work a station or something on the mountain, along
with our 2 children (6 and 8). Since the kids are underage, she can work crowd
control at either halfway or the top and still have the kids with her.

I stopped rallying before the kids were really able to remember it so this will
be the first time they've seen me in 'action' live.

My gang will be staying at the WHite Birches Camping Park sites 60 and
    61. Their number is (603) 466-2022.

The campground is really in Shelburne which is next to Gorham. Hot
showers and a pool (for the nice weather) make it pleasant....

We've reserved a tent site near Jim. It ought to be a fun weekend. At
this point I may not have a ride (negociations have stalled...) but we're
still going on vacation and watching the event.

I just received this message from Paul Giblin of the auto road this
morning....

====================================================================
It's 8:05am and we've just been given the "GO" to drive stages to
the summit for the first time this year - it's the latest opening to the
summit since 1953, 45 years ago! There are still snow banks along the
roadside 15 feet high in places... but we're goin' to the top! The
road's in great shape though, thanks to the road crew...they've been
putting in some long hours this spring. We're planning to deliver a
dump truck load of snow on the state house plaza in Concord tomorrow
with a sign saying "Mt. Washington Auto Road now open to the summit!"
placed in the snow... it should get some press - I hope! Watch the
Channel 9 news in Manchester Thursday night... By the way, we've
received 39 hillclimb entries to date... we're ahead of where we were
last year at this time... We had 54 total last year, so it looks as
though we may top that! We'll see... Talk to you soon! Gib
