325.0. "Where are the Short Track Ovals near Central Mass" by WONDER::COYLE () Wed Jun 02 1993 14:29

I am a life long fan of Car Racing who was hooked early
when my father used to take me to the long passed Norwood
Speedway. Unfortunately the better coverage by cable T.V.
has allowed my local knowledge to lapse.

I would like to take a three year old to his first races.
Even though as an adult I've enjoyed NASCAR, INDY, CANAM,
F1 and almost anything I think small track ovala are the
best bet for this age group.

Could anyone ou there help me find an appropriate venue
not too far (1 to 2 hours) from Leominster, Mass.

Two potential tracks, if they still exist, are:

Seekonk Speedway - (Seekonk, Mass near Pawtucket R.I.)
    	Star Speedway - (Epping N.H.)

    Questions:

Do either of theses still exist?
Do you have any other suggestions?
What night do they run on?
    	What do they run?

My main interest is to expose a three year old to the excitement.
I am more interested in the spectecle rather than the quality
of racing (Noise, Bright coulors and Action).

    Thanks for any help.

Star in Epping and Hudson Speedway in Hudson, NH should still be around.
If I remember right, Star was run on Saturday nights and Hudson ran on
  Sundays.

Star Speedway in Epping New Hampshire runs on Saturday nights
every week.

There's also Lee Speedway, which is right near Star. They run on
Friday nights.

Hudson Speedway is on Route 102 in Hudson NH -- just over the
Mass border beyond Nashua. They run every Sunday afternoon.
Hudson is real old-fashioned bull-ring 1/4 mile, lots of "local
color" :) reminds me a lot of the old Westboro Speedway in
Westboro, Mass.

I have a similar situation, but my son is 8. Over the last
couple of years he has started getting interested in cars--they
pick up a lot of bad stuff once they start going to school!

I would suggest that for a 3 year old you might want to go
to a car museum or a static car show. Drag strips and
stadium shows (mud trucks, etc.) are pretty loud and, seriously,
you might scare him. My experience is that walking around and
climbing on cars (try Larz Anderson) might be a better way
to go for such a young kid.

I took my son, Benjamin, who will be 4 in August to his first races this
last month. The only precaution I took was to purchase a pair of shooters
headphones to reduce the noise level. Since he has grown up watching the
races with Dad he knew a little of what to expect. He did very well at the
first race because the racing went quick with very few breaks. The second
time he was a lot more restless and bored but that was due to the slow pace
and the lengthy caution periods but not too bad for a 3 year old. We will
probably go to a few more races this year.

Lee USA is one of my favorites. The standard mix include Super Mods,
Pro Stocks, Late Model Stocks, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks. They
also have (occasionally) Busch North, and Modifieds. One interesting
aspect of Lee is that it is slightly longer than the average small
oval - about 1/3 mile, and it has a concrete wall all the way around.
It may not sound like a lot, but the Supers really fly there, and it
makes for great Pro Stock racing (the latter far and away the best
racing at the local level, IMO).

My kids like the Supers for speed, the Pro Stocks for action (and to
root for the hometown guys), plus the pits are directly behind the
grandstand (although the Supers etc. pit in the infield) so they can see
the cars being worked on, as well as the off-track competition.
325.7I remember hearing riverside at night. When I didn't go.VMSNET::M_MACIOLEKFour54 Camaro/Only way to flyTue Aug 10 1993 05:3313
Define "near". (Living in Atlanta, Talladega is 100 miles "close")

I always liked Riverside in Agawam Mass (1/4 mile), just off I-91.
Just to the south is Stafford Motor Speedway (1/2 mile). Near the Rhode
Island Border inside Connecticut is Thompson (3/4). Out to the west
just inside New York is Lebanon Valley, which is dirt.

Riverside (and Monadnock I believe) is/was one of only 3 tracks
in the country that ran Tour type Modifieds on a weekly basis.
Stafford has 3 tour races a year, every other weekend it's
"Winston Racing Series Modifieds". Nice, but not the real thing.

Check them all out. Then come South. :')
325.8Hudson Speedway, N.H. Rookie Stocks!STRATA::SHEEHANThu Aug 26 1993 09:5611
This season I returned to the enjoyment of stock car racing. I remember
going to Norwood as a kid with my Dad. Now that I live in Hudson, Ma.
we have been going to Hudson New Hampshire to the speedway on Sunday
nights. The real fun has been the involvement with an entry. The
Rookie stocks is a get way to get into racing without dishing out big
bucks. My S.O. is the main brain behind the Eng. and adjustments while
a good friend of his is the driver. If you should get there some Sun.
night before the season ends, give a big cheer for Al Furbush in the
#37 in the Rookie Stocks division. So far he is points leader for the
season in the Rookie Stocks division. GO!!! #37!!! Lots of fun!!

325.9any thing in south east MA or RI?SPESHR::ZEITZWed Aug 03 1994 15:2610
I live in Norwood MA, which is south west of Boston. The
pointers in this note are helpful, but I'm a ways from N.H.

Does anyone know if Seekonk Speedway is operating? Are there
any tracks in eastern MA, or RI?

         thanks,
         Fran

I used to live in Norwood, as well. I'm told there used to be a short
track off of Rt.1 right in town.

Anyway, I'm not sure about Seekonk, but you are not far from Thomson in
Connecticut. (Exit 99 from 395). They do the NASCAR Featherlite
thing. (Does any one know if the road course is still there?)
325.11Yes, there is racing at SeekonkSPESHR::ZEITZTue Aug 23 1994 13:5222

Seekonk: Last Friday I bought a Providence newspaper, and in
the Sports Calendar section under Auto Racing was:

         Seekonk Speedway, Route 6, Sat. 6 p.m., 508-336-9959 or
         508-336-9164

We went there saw some racing and had a great time. I
         haven't tried the phone numbers.

Norwood: I'm not from around here, so I don't remember the
Norwood track. My wife is, and her brother was involved with
some cars that ran there. It seems it was a 1/4 mile paved
oval on the northbound side of Rt.1. There's an industrial
         park there now.

         Thanks for everyone's help.

         Fran
