| I got a call from racing fan, car owner, crew person, sometime Digital
contract software person Bill Gavin last week. He asked me to take a
look at the August STOCK CAR RACING magazine -- in particular, Mike
Joy's column.
I did. And soon realized that Mike Joy probably started writing that
issue's column ("Racing's Unsung Heroes Score") one day last summer
while I had him under my thumb at Lime Rock Park. We were shorthanded
in timing and scoring (what's new), and I was making appeal after
appeal for volunteers to come to the tower and help.
Mike showed his face, gave me his personable smile, and said "Hey, I'd
like to help out. What would you like me to do?" Says I, "Get down
there to the end of the bench. You'll run the printer. Whatever you
think you know about what's going on here, you don't. Just do what
you're told when you're told and we'll have a happy time -- don't ask
any questions now 'cause cars are on track and things are going to get
pretty nutty around here in a few seconds."
Later in the season, Mike handed me a few typewritten sheets of paper
that have now become his August column.
It's nice to see out names in print -- it's nice to know that some
people do know the effort it takes to get those times in and those
results out.

| We're (NER) trying to find the perfect stopwatch -- perfect for the way
NER does timing and scoring. Here's what we think we want -- if you
have seen a watch that'll do this, or if you can give me a pointer to a
stopwatch source, please let me know.
Needs:
-- dual display (split & cumulative times)
-- two button operation only
-- stop/reset
-- split
-- no need to release after taking split
-- 1/100th
DON'T WANTS: lap memory, date, time, phone numbers, modes, etc.
