74.0. "Paul Warwick - RIP" by SOLVIT::PLATT () Wed Jul 24 1991 15:09

    From today's issue of the Vogon News Service --

    	Paul Warwick, brother of F1 driver Derek Warwick, was killed in an
    accident at the F3000 meeting at Olton park. Warwick lost control of
    his Mansell-Madgwick Reynard on the 23rd lap, the car disintegrating on
    impact with the barriers. He was transported to hospital by helicopter
    but was dead on arrival.

74.1Tragic LossCOMICS::COOMBEREndurance racers do it all nightThu Jul 25 1991 08:1814
    I heard that it was caused by suspension failure at the end of a
    160'ish mph straight , causing the car to go straight on into the
    barrier. The car burst into flames on impact. He was postumously
    awarded the race as it was red flaged and the positions stood. There
    were rumblings about not enough runoff etc etc . I have not read
    anything in the motoring press yet , but Autosport is out today and I'm
    sure there will be something in there.

    A great loss to motorsport.

    The suspected cause of the accident that killed Paul Warwick would seem
    to be true.

    This weeks Autosport (25th july) has a 2 page tribute to Paul with a
    short report on the accident. An eyewitness reported that as Warwick
    attempted to turn in Knickerbrook , a fifth gear 150 mph bend , one of
    the front wheels was off the ground, suggesting a failure. The car just
    went straight on and hit the armco head on. The car shattered and paul
    was thrown from the car , the car burst into flames. Warwick was flown
    to Staffordshire Royal infirmary where he later died form the injuries
    sustained.

    	That is basiclly what the report says, it goes on to praise the
    doctors and marshalls etc etc for the effort made to try and save his
    life.

Over the weekend Kara Hendrick was killed in a Midget race. Kara has appeared
on the Saturday/Thursday Night Thunder races on ESPN and was an up and coming
young midget driver.

74.4Mark KentOASS::BURDEN_D'24 Stude - The only way to TourTue Mar 24 1992 14:185
I got mail this morning from Tom Kong (ex DECie, now on the West Coast) that
Firehawk driver Mark Kent was killed in practice for a Firehawk race at
Laguna Seca. Mark belonged to COM and SCCA (I think).

74.5Mark Kent - RIPSOLVIT::PLATTTue Mar 24 1992 16:3111
    Dave, don't believe it was Laguna, but Sebring according to word from
    Laughlin and the Blethens. Mark's funeral was this morning in Hingham
    with donations going to the Jimmy Fund rather than flowers. From the
    sparse word we got, he apparently lost control of the M3, went up and
    over (or thru, no one seems sure) a guardrail and into a motor home.
    His dad was apparently at the event when it happened. That's about
    all we heard up hear. I also can't clarify whether or not he was an
    SCCA member.

    I believe it was in Sebring, I also heard it was brake failure. This
    was through Marks sister who I know, but I can't confirm the
    mechanical failure. It was secondhand, I will know more Thursday when I
    see Jane's Fiance'.

    There has been some mention of this on the USEnet in the
    "wheeltowheel" list and the rec.autos.sport newsgroup.

    I understand it was a single-car high-speed roll that went over/thru
    the spectator fence and hit an RV bus. Cause hadn't been mentioned,
    mechanical failure might be plausible. I believe it was mentioned that
    the car was new, don't know how much testing/track time might have been
    on it though.

    Paul Czernacki posted a nice eulogy mentioning that Mark had won the
    NER's Stirling Moss trophy twice, so he was an active Solo competitor
    as well as a roadracer.

    One statement on USEnet sums it up for me:

    	"Mark died doing what he loved."	RIP.

Also got word that long time COM and PCA member Ray Gadbois passed away a
week or so ago. He was always a fair competitor and knew how to make that
911 fly on the track!

He lost the battle with cancer. RIP
