256.0. "Mazda wins Le Mans 1991" by LJOHUB::CRITZ (John Ellis to ride RAAM '91) Mon Jun 24 1991 12:06

Mazda won the 24-hour race at Le Mans over the weekend.

    	Jaguar second, third, and fourth.

    	Mercedes fifth (I believe).

Two other Mazda in sixth and eighth, or somewhere close.

This is the first win by a car from Japan, in the 59 year history of
the 24 hours of Le Mans.

I can see the Mazda ads now, and for the next 12 months....

    Hee hee hee...

Nissan and Toyota heads must be rolling right now... :^)

    Picture it...

Nissan Executive : "Ah Head Of Finance San. You know you said we'd
waste our money doing the SWC and Le Mans"

Head Of Finance : "Yes, Executive San"

N.E. : "Well it doesn't look as if you convinced Mazda...Care to
    	    borrow my Seppuca knife?"

PS Mercedes fastest, but broke mid-day on Sunday, Jaguar reliable, but
slow with all that extra weight which Mazda so cleverly (?) managed not
to get lumbered with. It was a great race this year, with plenty of
drama and excitement. New pits are good too, but it was a pity they
didn't open the paddock on Friday night this year.

    Mark,

Permit a cynic a mild flame...

As FISA strengthens its' grip on LeMans spectators will be less and
less welcome at all areas of the circuit. This will manifest itself in
two ways, outrageous security and F1 style ticket prices.

Le Mans was great this year -- the early sprint by the Peejoes,
the almost domination by the Mercs and the surprize winner.
But Group C is attractive because of the whole package and it
will lose if it changes the appeal to the spectators.

Group C appeals to spectators ? Since when ? Last Sunday at
Magny Cours only 10,000 bothered to turn up. Its much the same
wherever the "circus" pitches camp; the exception being Le Mans.

Very true, Dave. 10k? Did you see the figures for the GTCC race on
an industrial estate near Zurich? Over 10 TIMES that figure!!!!!

Group C is poorly promoted and if only 10k Frenchman turn out
to watch an on form Peugeot team waltz to a 1-2 victory, what kind
of crowd do you think an unpopular round will attract?

I notice next year's WORLD Sportscar Championship includes 2 races
in France, 2 in Italy, 2 in Japan, 1 in Germany, 1 in Britain, 1
in the US (Oh yeah!!!!) and 1 in Spain (Who are they kidding?!?!).
    Some WORLD championship, eh?
