| Result of the Brands Hatch round of the FIA F3000 championship:
1. McNish
2. Hill
3. Apicella
4. Irvine
I went to this race yesterday - it was a cool and damp day, in complete
contrast to the GP last month. The race started wet, but the line dried
out to the extent that tyre changes became mandatory, and this factor
dominated the race.
In the wet it was Hill, McNish, and Irvine who rapidly moved ahead until
McNish made one of the early tyre changes, and then followed up almost
immediately with another stop to check the new tyres. Damon Hill stayed in
the lead until he was spectacularly passed by Irvine at Paddock, then he
came in for slicks. This was a disaster, a sticking wheel costing him
around a minute, and he only just returned to the circuit ahead of Irvine,
who quickly lapped him. It was soon clear though that slicks were the
thing to have as Hill retook Irvine and streaked away from him. Irvine
didn't get the message until he eventually spun, but by the time he
switched rubber it was too late and he dropped to fourth. All this left
McNish comfortably ahead of Hill, and the 20 year old Scot cruised to his
second F3000 win. At least Hill, who's led four races this year but failed
to finish once, got on the podium. Hill's one of the few remaining users
of the Cosworth engine (the rest are using the Honda-based Mugen), which
was first tested in the back of a Lotus by his father back in 1967.
Comas, who leads the championship still, was way back in the grid (he was
on pole last year) and didn't show at all in the race. John Jones was just
ahead of him in mid grid, but disappeared very early in the race.

| Only just found my way back to this conference, but at just the right
time.
Hill has been a real revelation this season. I always thought he was a
pretty good driver in his F3 days but to be able to put a Cosworth
powered car on pole in 3 races and lead 4 (or is it 5 now?) in it is a
VERY impressive feat. If there's any justice in this world Hill will be
in F1 soon, especially as he achieves his success without mega-buck
cigarette sponsorship. He is also very consistent. He hasn't finished
many races this season, but only one was due to a mistake by him and
the other failures have been of types which aren't due to him over-
working the car (no blown engines).
I hope he makes it.
