2.0. "Who reads this file?" by EUCLID::PAULHUS () Tue Oct 29 1985 15:59

This file should be one of the most interesting in all note-dom, but
the lack of submissions and replies, or slowness of same, compared to
the topic, amazes me. Could it be that we have not reached a
'critical mass' yet (no comments about how critical this mass could
get, please). So, I have gone back through the notes to find out
who is participating: I know darn will from some meetings of the
DEC Sports Car Club (stillborn, RIP?) that there are active racers
who haven't been seen here. Here's the list so far:
		LYONS, CARTER, PAULHUS, READIO, MACGILLIVARY,
DRL (= LYONS?), CHAMBERS, OSTRUM, FERREIRA, SMONTANO, DEHAHN,
SLATER, GSCOTT, COLES, MILBERG, INVVR3S, and VINCENT.
If you know any racers who aren't reading/contributing to this
note, please ask them to. Thanks, Chris

I have been following this conference for sometime now but had not
contributed until recently. I like almost every kind of racing as
I have been exposed to racing all my life.

I currently bought a stock car for the Roundy-Round tracks here
in Colorado and hope to participate in the Hill Climbs. Pikes Peak???
I'm not sure if I'm ready for that yet but who knows. Maybe a few
more brain cells will die off and I'll be ready to try it.

I THINK THE REASON ALOT OF PEOPLE DON'T USE THIS NOTES FILE IS
BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT IS LISTED. IF YOU TRY TO ADD THE ENTRY
THE WAY IT IS LISTED {ALIEN,BEING}::RACERS IT DOES NOT
WORK! AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS IT FINALLY WORKED WHEN I JUST
    USED ALIEN::RACERS

RE .-1

I too ran into this the first time but didn't take long to figure
out what it meant. There are other notes files listed the same so it must
be standard convention. I wonder if VMS Notes would work with DEC-NET
aliases. This would be one way to solve the multiple node names.

... for F-1, Group C, GTP and CART.

I watch a little Winston Cup on the tube so I'll probably be mainly
read-only in there, but you can't argue with wheel-to-wheel racing
    like they do!

I raced bikes a bit as a youth. Nowadays I'm limited to 4-wheel
drifts on cloverleafs in my Saab Turbo, but what the hey...

Grew up in Indy and cut school many a time to hang around the paddock
(used to be able to get into during the week days for a half buck,
and the place was nearly empty. My brother used to take me out
to Raceway Park where he drag raced his stock muscle cars. (He
does a little SCCA sports cars now.)

I have this fantasy of buying a Miata or a 300ZX and doing autocross.

I guess since I've been commenting for almost a year I should say who I
am.. I'm Linda Pflum, work at Forge Rd. in Colorado Spgs. I don't race
anything. I ride a 1979 Harley Davidson Sportster. I've been going to
car races all of my life. I grew up in Owego N.Y. so I went to
Shangrila forever. I used to go up to Oswego speedway too. We went
to Langhorne speedway when I was in 5th grade and I got to see A.J.
Foyt.. it hardly seems like he's up there in age that much, but I
still root for him at Indy! As far as racing Nascar Winston cup is
my all time favorite.. and my favorites are well know in this file.
I'll probably be a Rusty Wallace fan until he races no more.. and
Kenny will probably be up there too..
    I enjoy this file..

I too, like others, have been reading for some time but only recently
started contributing. I do not race anything but grew up around
stock car racing since I was about 5 or 6. My dad worked on track
crews all over Eastern Pa. I love NASCAR racing. I am Terry Foley
from Allentown Pa. I usually tape (VHS) every NASCAR race that
I get on my cable service. If anyone ever wants a certain race
bad enough to pay for shipping, give me a try.
My fondest memories are of meeting Donnie Allison in the late 50's
at a track in Pa. while he was racing modifieds. Also met Mario
and Aldo Andretti before they became hot stuff. So many of these
drivers got their start at small tracks in the Northeast.
In the last 2 or 3 years I have started trecking to Nascar events
farther and farther from home, including Daytona and both Talladega
races this year. My goal is to move to Atlanta so I can be closer
to more events. I'm just a NASCAR junkie....

I am mainly a reader of this conference, but I do enter replies once
    in a while.

While my racing activities are well below some of other participants
I am happy to report that I do some low key competitive driving.

I have a Porsche (911S 73) and by being a member of the PCA I get to
enter in some autocrossing and such. The "high point of my carreer"
was doing one of the "Drivers school and Time Trials" at Laguna Seca.
(I didn't got the slowest time, but I wasn't too far of it) I do
enjoy it a lot, and it's great.

      Hello race fans,

Brian Adams here, I work at DEC in Greenville, S.C. I was raised
in western N.C. Where dirt tracks prevail every Saturday night!
Bill Elliott was a regular as was Jody Ridley. As a matter of
fact my older sister use to date Jody. As for here n G'vlle, We
have all kinds of different tracks to choose from over the weekend!
I mostly cover the NASCAR circut, mainly Charlotte,Atlanta, and
    Darlington,since they are the closest.

I rent a garage out to some friends of mine over the racing season,
and they went out and took sixth place over-all in the Daytona-Dash
series. Great Huh? Anyway, Looking forward to noting with all you
race fans. And hopefully, I can meet some you at the races!

I guess it's time for me to sign in. I'm Steve Powis. I work at
DAS in Andover, Ma. I don't race anything (some day...), but I enjoy
watching most forms of "real" (ie not 'battle of the monster trucks')
racing; this includes boats, motorcycles, and of course cars. I
like road racing, drag racing, and ovals ('specially dirt!) and
definately think watching a race 'in person' is much better than
seeing it on TV. Over the last several years I've been to Lime Rock,
Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Charlotte, and to the Canadian
and German Grands Prix. I still haven't been to a CART race or a
NASCAR race (I saw SCCA TransAM/Super Vee at Charlotte); maybe next
    year...

HI all, is there a list file for Racers??

Well I know I have talk to some of you before. I use to have
the nascar report and local racing news every week on a system
Renovo but since then was taken off because it was so busy.

I formaly drove the Pace Car for Westboro Speedway and the
Coastal racing Assoc. You may have seen my Pace cars around
Digital at one time. I'm very much into Grand National racing
an good friends with Ron Bouchard, Geoff Bodine and Greg Sacks.

Our Family started the Greg Sacks Fan club back when he raced at
Westboro Speedway with Lee Allard. I was on WOTW AND WHAV RADIO
Speedline motorsport talk show and next season will hopefuly be
with another Radio Station in N.H. Would like to talk Racing of
local interest and Grand National. I also had a Telephone Network
called "Victory LAne Report (24) hour Auto racing recorded news
that was out of Dracut Mass. We are in the process of Getting
some new Sponsers for next year and try to start it up again.

Well I guess this is enough for now, any more info on request.

Hope I can help some of you maybe with some Questions.

Well I really injoy this notes file. Take care all and have a
"SUPER-MODIFIED" day. Was also the falgman at Star Speedway.

I have a question for all of the folks out EAST,

Has anyone ever been to / heard of the Museum that BMW runs
in NEW YORK?? I am interested in going there to get some photos
of the ART CARS made in the mid 70's so I can mimick the paint
job on my personal street version of these racers.

If anyone has any information about this, I would greatly
appreciate it, since I am going to NEW YORK over 4th of JULY
weekend and would like to see the museum myself.

Thanks in advance for any info.

re. -< BMW MUSEUM IN NEW YORK >-

I recall seeing what could possibly be what you want. On Park Ave.
somewhere between 46th and 56th street there is a place that has a lot of
BMW cars and motorcycles on display. From what I remember walking past, the
display changed every couple of months. There are cut-away models as well
as racers and production models.

Carl Fisher here- I drive a Dodge Omni GLH which I am setting up for 2
different kinds of racing- PRO Rally and autocrossing. Very different,
but not so tough to switch back and forth between (except maybe mentally?).
I'm almost ready for rallying (still need a couple small things), but
have been doing autocrosses for about a month now. They sure are a lot
less expensive than rallies! (and a lot easier on the car!) I run Street
Prepared C for auto-X, will run Production for rallying; still learning
what to do when, but I'm having fun, and that's my goal.

I enjoy reading this file, but I wish there was more about people who
actually race sharing stories, info, etc, and a little less stuff about
watching TV.

younger. (Anyone remember that place, use to call it "Motor Capital
of the East") I was an avvid Mario Andretti fan, still am, back then.
My attention has turned alot more to NASCAR type racing over the years.
Up here, we get to see, ACT and NASCAR North competion, as well as
Drag racing in near by Canada (about 45mins). Soon, I hope to see
NHIS in (use to be Bryar) open up to WInston Cup racing!! That would

I've been reading this file off and on for a couple years,
and finally have something to contribute ...

I started out as a go-fer for one of my dad's partners with a
Bugeye Sprite, in 1968 ... We finally made the runoffs in '73,
only to have the motor blow on the pace lap ... Did get to see
P.L. Newman stuff his 510 into the bank during practice, though ...

I stayed on the fringe of sports car racing in Phoenix through
the '70's, wrenching on a couple Bugeye's for friends, and worked
for a racecar shop / import auto parts store owned by Don Roberts,
(1968 BP Nat'l Champ in a Cobra) while I was in college.

Don put together a deal to run TransAm in '82 - I was taking 18
hours at ASU (trying to graduate), working 20 hours a week at
DEC PNO (dragging a robot around the mfg floor) and wrenching
on the car (a "Mustang" that Tom Gloy ran the year before).
We made two races, Sear Point (finished 7th) and Laguna Seca
(DNF - engine) before the $$$'s ran out, and I moved to ABO
to become a mfg eng ...

Well, Don's got another deal together for the TransAm in Phx
(support race for the F1) ... I'm spending the next 3 weekends
plus the week of the 5th working on the car ... All I know so
far is it's a Tbird, built a couple years ago, maybe ran a
	couple races ...

So, I'll be filing a race report from Phoenix, probably the
12th or 13th ... Any DECcies who'll be in the area, drop me a
	line, let's get together ...

Hello,My name is Mike Phillips and I will be a regular participant in
this file.I have a pretty good back-ground in racing from my
father, mostly on the dirt tracks though.I have driven the car on
occasion, but never in an actual race. I raced motorcycles when I was
younger and I enjoy going to the races, local and afar!!!
I was born and raised in G'ville,S.C.,spent a brief time in
    Norwalk,Calif. and moved back east!!!
My father was in racing all his life, he knew Ralph Earnhardt
pretty well and Ralph actually raced our car twice once at
Greenville/Pickens when it was dirt and once at Cherokee, both were
Shrine races and he won the one at Cherokee. These tracks are local so I
know some of you don't know were there at.So,I guess thats why I'm a
big Earnhardt fan. There Is No Other!!!!!!!
Loking forward to talking with you guys in the near future.

2.22From the quiche and white-wine set ...BOOKIE::HASTIEThu May 31 1990 20:5943
Well, after hearing about this file many times, I've finally
gotten around to adding it to my notebook. So, let me introduce
myself ... My name is Lillian Hastie; I'm an editor in the
documentation operation in Nashua, NH. For jollies, I run a 1976
Honda Civic 1200 (one of the tiny old cute roundy ones?) in
street-prepared trim in time trials and occasional autocrosses.
My love is driving road courses in Solo I style competition. I run
on a regular basis with the COM Sports Car Club at New Hampshire
Int'l Speedway, formerly known as Bryar. I've even had some success,
taking a points championship in '87, competing against everything
from a Chevette to a Bugeye (who smoked me good in '88).

The car -- we call it The Lunchbox -- is fairly heavily modified.
It's stroked for extra torque, carries a big carb, header, 3/4 race
cam, turbo "muffler"; it's lowered on cut stock springs, with
way-stiff shocks, heavy sway bars, 6" wheels and low-profile street
tires, plus the usual safety stuff. Horsepower is low with 1200 cc,
but it corners with a lot of cars sporting race rubber, and I can do
lap times faster than some cars with a lot more power and faster than
a lot cars that cost a *whole* bunch more ... anyway, it's a TON OF
FUN!

I myself have been track driving and autocrossing since '84. I
come by it dishonest, being the child of car-hating
Manhattanites. I took a fourth place in a BMW car club national
autocross, and was hooked. I've driven Bryar (a lot), Lime Rock
(some), and Bridgehampton (once). Only once have I gone
fender-to-fender -- I passed one car and then spun for watching the
mirrors. :) I like time trials better, really ... more of a game,
less of a fight.

And now the season has begun. I'm off to the kind of start I
like: 1st place, ST4, perfect after one event. Next COM trials are
June 23rd, and I can't wait. The new track at Bryar (excuse me, New
Hampshire International Speedway) is a blast and a half -- I LOVE
it!

Psychologists have a term, "dynamic simultaneous sensation," they
use to describe things that feel good in several places at once ...
like racing ... ;) ... gee, but I love the smell of CAM II in the
morning ...

My name is Fred Zufelt, I am from Ottawa, Canada. I work in CSS Kanata

I have been interested in Auto racing from my early teens when my

My racing experience is from R.C. model car racing (1970 to 75)
to Go kart racing 1975 to present time. I am part owner in a racing
only Kart track and fairly active in running our local kart club

up to F.F./F.V. but couldn't find the funds to do things right.

My racing interests are F-1 to CART to IMSA to NASCAR, what ever
I can see ( my wife complains all I do is watch racing, only when
it's on). I have gone to the last 8 Canadian Grand Prix's and have
my tickets for the Group C sports cars at Montreal next weekend.

I love reading the inside scoops found here, plus what other enthusiast
    think of things and stuff.

Thanks for taking the time to have these notes.

    Happy racing

Hi everyone, I have been reading this conference for a couple of months
now and I guess it's time to introduce myself. My name is Chris Fox,
and I'm a Field Service (Customer Service?) engineer in the Washington,
    D.C. area.
Other than occasional street battles and watching some drag races at a
small local facility when I was a kid, my first "real" race was at a
place called Virginia International Raceway in Danville, Va. in 1973.
I went as a guest of a worker, but after that I signed up as a worker
since it seemed to be a good way to get closer to the action.

Along the way, I have been a Pit and Paddock, Flag, and Grid worker,
with some nights spent in Registration. Besides working Regional and
National SCCA events, I worked F1 and F5000 events many years ago.
Since around 1979 I have been driving British Sprites in Production
classes--starting with a Bugeye in HP then a MK II in GP. On occasion
I've co-driven Showroom Stock and IT in endurance events.

After so many years (meaning far too many spent in the garage trying to
make a British car leak less oil and pretend it should be reliable) I
have no idea what my record in racing is. Since my local competition is
noted for winning such things as most East Coast lap records,
Divisional Championships and the Runoffs, I used to only run Regionals
to avoid them. For the last two years though, I decided to see how
close I could come to them, and ended up going to the Runoffs--which
means if there are any sponsors out there with money to throw away,
call me, it's not easy competing against these guys! Last year I
finished 5th at the Runoffs, and this year my car will be faster, so
    I'll probably do worse.

For the technically minded, the car started life as a 1964 Austin
Healey Sprite, Mk.II. According to the engine dyno, it produces around
112 HP, uses Cosworth pistons, Carillo rods, 15.5/1 compression ratio,
Electromotive ignition, Quartermaster clutch, coil-over Watts link
suspension, etc. It's also for sale at the end of October!!!!!!!

Now, if I can only get the engines built, the suspension finished, the
brakes working, and the bodywork done, maybe I can go watch an F1 or
    NASCAR race on TV......

If anyone will be at Atlanta in October, stop by. I'll be somewhere
near "Creighton's Corner" on the skid pad close to turn one...look for
a row of Production cars, mine is light blue, the number is 29.

My name is Robert Fulton, and I live in York County, South Carolina.
During the day I spend my time as an Inside Sales Rep in the Charlotte,
    NC office.

In my very early days, I did some drag racing at tracks in Lancaster
and York, Pennsylvania. From then until 2 1/2 years ago, I have been a
spectator at SCCA, NASCAR, and CART races ( also made a few hydroplane
    events as well).

In March of 1988 I attended my first short-track dirt race and got
hooked. I spent free time in 1988 and 1989 as a crew member of a team
that fielded a `Super Six' wedge bodied car. This past year I have
been one of two sponsors of 2 VW `Bugs' that run in the modified
4-cylinder class at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, NC. Results with
one car were dismal, but two weeks ago we clinched the points
championship in our class with the other car.

I don't know what next year holds as the owners of both cars have
decided to retire from racing. I like being a spectator, but having
more involvement is a lot more fun.

Lets hear from other dirt-track fans out there.

...and there's the checkered flag. Hi, I'm Grant Kimura. I work in
the Toronto office. I just found this conference today. I've been a
long time NASCAR fan. Unfortunately, I don't have cable, or pay-tv so
I'm out of touch as to who's winning the Winston Cup race. I was a fan
of one of the greats, Bobby Allison. Will he every return to racing?

I also like to watch F1 racing. My favorite driver is Alessandro Nanni
in his Ford Benneton. I watch Indy CART racing sometimes. I like
Emerson Fittapaldi (sp?). Why do I like this guy? I don't know, I
just think is name is kinda neat.

    Hi,

I am VERY new to this file and think that I will just enjoy reading
it for awhile. I have done no formal racing whatsoever. My fiancee
races a drag snowmobile, and a drag bike. I recently began fooling
around with an 'ice car' (demolition ovals on ice) but really dream
of the type of racing you write about in this file!

	Hello,

I just found this conference today ( should have looked
	for it before, but..).
I've been following Indy cars since my dad took me to a
USAC race at P.I.R. Since then I've been a regular at
the local USAC, and now CART races. Now that NASCAR is
running at P.I.R. I'm now following NASCAR ( to a lesser
	degree).
Pit passes in hand, I'm looking forward to the Valvoline

   Morning,

I stumbled onto this conference while searching through EASYNOTES.LIS.
I'm in between "particular" cars right now. I started my racing life in
a '74 Opel Manta, primarily in slaloms and TSD rallies (DON'T laugh, one
of them was laid out by two SCCA Pro-rally guys, and was considered for
one of their Pro events). The bulk of my experience has been in the north
Alabama and southern Tennessee area. I've crewed for several club Ford
and Formula Ford runners. I've also been involved in Timing and Scoring
at several SCCA Road Races at the Old Airport in Huntsville, Al, before
they centralized their Road Racing program and left solo I & II only in
   Huntsville.

I'm currently trying to rejuvenate the Opel (parts and $$ the main problems)
for slaloming and rallies. I occaisonally slalom an Omni GLH Turbo when
the mood strikes and the wallet is willing. I'm also trying to find a
truly meaningful, adrenaline-surge-producing use for a Ford 429 that has
been the most reliable engine I've ever dealt with. It'll be really good
to get back to it on a regular schedule again..

I would think that almost any use would fit those qualifications,
    especially the second one!

As for truly meaningful, anything producing the expected adrenaline
    surge should qualify!

I guess it's time for me to say something. I work at PKO in the ESC.
I just got involved in the SCCA this year. I enjoy most all forms of
car racing. I won't mention the ones I don't like to avoid enemies.
I enjoy reading this notesfile becasue alot of it I get to take place
in the SCCA. I'm a flagger or corner worker having fun and already
looking forward to next year. I will chime in every now and again with
    something to say.

I think the race in detail updates are great. It's fun to see the
driver's side of it. Someday I would myself like to get back into the
    driver's seat. $$$$

I'm returning to RACERS after a long absence, so I'll
	re-introduce myself...

I started out reading Road & Track and Sports Car Graphic, and
spectating at the USGP at Watkins Glen during the 1500ccformula.
When I graduated college, I joined SCCA, and spent eight years
as a Corner Worker, occasionally working Tech, and Fire & Rescue.

During this time I met some drivers, and crewed for several HP
Sprites and a GP Spitfire. I bought a Mini-Cooper, and started
autocrossing, then COM Time Trials, and then SCCA racing in the
old C-Sedan class. A wreck at Lime Rock put me out of racing for
a while, but I stayed involved as Treasurer, then President of COM,
and crewed at SCCA races for my friends.

I bought and rebuilt an HP Sprite, but sold it to buy my house.
	Later, I ran a Mini-Cooper in COM's ST4 class, replacing it with
an MG Midget in the same class, before returning to SCCA racing
with a G-Production Sprite. One of my friends, Glenn Kus, had sold
his FP Midget to buy a Sports Renault, with which he had been pretty
successful, but felt it was time to move on. Since I had a car, we
decided to team up, with Glenn driving, and me as car owner. We
qualified for the Runoffs every year we ran the car, and did pretty
well compared to the other Sprites. Our most consistent competition
came from Chris Fox of DEC's Washington, DC office, I'm not sure who
won most often, but Chris and Glenn had some terrific races and a lot
of fun. Glenn hung up his helmet last year, but another friend, Bill
Collyer ran the car and once again, qualified for the Runoffs, but
was unable to go due to lack of finance.

I had picked up another GP Sprite, which we fielded for various
friends, and Glenn's wife, Susan, got her SCCA license, and nearly
won the NER regional championship. For Glenn's last year, we ran
both Glenn and Susan in Nationals, qualifying both for the Runoffs.
We even got some featured time in the Official Runoffs Video.

Finances are keeping my involvement at a minimum, but Bill will
probably run the car again next year, and maybe I'll finish the
	'67 Sprite I'm restoring.

Mad Mike from Atlanta Georgia signing in.

I mod the INDEC::NASCAR (nascar racing) note and occasionally play
in the DRAG_RACING note, but in the last year I've really gotten
into Formula 1 and SCCA racing so I figured it's time to add this
    conference into my notebook.

I get to about 5 or 6 Winston Cup races a year, and at least 2 big
drag races. Other than that, I'm currently drag racing a 1980
454 Z28 Camaro (when it runs) and my friend owns a Late Model
stock car that he races at Lanier (when it runs). My other friend
has a Lola Sports 2000 that he's trying to put together (caviar
dreams with a beer budget). When I get my finances sorted out,
I'm planning on building or buying a super gas (9.90 index) drag
car, and maybe another camaro to go driving through the woods at
road Atlanta, not sure of what class I'll be in (although GT looks
    pretty cool).
