56.0. "1957 Names" by GIGI::TRACY () Tue Oct 28 1986 17:18

I was reading an article at the doctor's office (in Savvy, September
1985) and it said that in 1957 there were more babies born in the
United States than ever before or than ever since. (I found this of
particular interest since I was born in 1957.) It went on to list
the most popular names of that year.

The girls' names (in order of popularity, I believe) were:

    			Linda
    			Mary
    			Patricia
    			Susan
    			Deborah
    			Kathy
    			Nancy
    			Sharon
    			Karen.

This holds pretty well with my experience, though I would have guessed
Kathy (or Cathy) Mary, Debbie and Susan as the top four in that
    order.

I didn't have as much time to read the boys' names (got called into
the doctor's office), but I do remember that numbers 2,3 and 4 were
Michael, John and James. (I don't know why #1 didn't stick in my
memory.) Steven was also on the list. What I thought were notable
exceptions were Joseph, David, Paul and Mark--all names of multiple
classmates of mine. I'm sure though that my experience with which names
were most popular (both boys and girls) was colored by the fact
that I attended 12 years of Catholic school. (I don't think there
    was a St. Nancy.)

Anyway, I wonder which names will be recorded as the most popular
in 1986. Danielle, Nicole, Morgan, Andrew...

TRACY, I BELIEVE I HEARD THAT ROBERT WAS THE MOST POPULAR BOY'S
NAME IN THAT ERA. I TOO NAMED ROBERT, BORN IN DEC. 1956
                                ROB LEAVITT

I also was born in 1957, but just barely - December 31, 1957! Anyway,
my mother wanted to name me Tammy because of the then famous Tammy
movies. Tammy is not such a bad name, but my maiden name is Thomes,
pronounced Toms. Can you imagine going through life with the name
Tammy Thomes? That would be awful. Fortunately my father vetoed
my mother's choice and named me Carole, of which I have always been
    grateful!

I went to school in Barstow, CA in 1968-80 with a girl named Tammy
Thoms. Not everyone escapes such an ugly fate.

I'm a 1957 baby and my name is Sandra Jean. My father was golfing
the moment I was born and he hadjust hit a birdie. He wanted to
name me Birdie. My mother said it was more likely he was in a sand
trap. My middle name is the same as my grandmother - Leah Jean.

I was the only Sandy/Sandra in my class. There were multiple Debs.
During my four years at high school (in Maynard) there were only
    2-3 Sandy/Sandra's.
