961.0. "What to name Jonathan's brother/sister?" by BIGQ::SORRELLS (Oh sure, another exciting day) Thu Sep 01 1994 21:02

Well, I, too am looking for suggestions. We're due in November. Let me give
you our criteria and thoughts to date:

I tend to like more traditional names and spellings. No offense to
anyone, but something unique like Moolah or a unique spelling like Khrystee
doesn't appeal to me.

I don't like a name that's too long: Katherine Elizabeth Sorrells
is too... well, it took me so long to type it I forgot what I was going to
say. We don't care too much for gender-neutral names such as Jamie. Again,
no offense to the Jamie's out there. A name which ends in 's' may be
difficult to ennunciate with my last name. I pronounce Sorrells so that it
rhymes more with 'quarrels' than with 'hotels'. Therefore Carl Sorrells sounds
funny and Giselle Sorrells may be a problem.

We named our first boy Jonathan Lee - After friends Jonathan, John Lee,
and JL, and my middle name of Lee.

Our most recent baby name book is called "Beyond Jennifer and Jason" or
something like that. That should give you an indication that unless we name
the child after someone, some of the 10 or 20 most popular names (Ashley Nicole
Brittany Caitlan), despite their appeal, are questionable for us.

So what's left? Two years ago we thought of Katherine (Katie) Haley
(wife's maiden name) Sorrells. Alas, our nextdoor neighbor had a Katie in
April.

For a boy, we might want to name him James after a good friend who recently
died. We had thought of Jesse, my wife's dad, but that seems fairly old
fashioned to me. And Jesse James Sorrells is not an option. For those who
like unique names, I could go with Arden (my home town) or Bryson (mom's
maiden name). Benjamin also appealed to me in a previous note.

For girls, Haley is still an option. My wife's grandmother was Madeline,
which fit her well, but seems old-fashioned to me, and Maddie doesn't do much
for me. The grandmothers are Helen and Mary Jane -- I suppose we could do
Mary Helen, but it sounds like a nun. Rachel I could live with.

The play group includes Michael(2), Matthew, Nathan, Annie(2), Paul, Jackie,
Kevin, Nina, and & Edie. Close family includes Jennifer, Sara, & Brian. I
would probably exclude these.

Suggestions.

David Lee (pretty common, eh?) Sorrells

961.1I like Bryson!WROSS2::CROW_DOFri Sep 02 1994 00:2919
    Hello David,

I think Bryson Sorrells is an excellent name for a boy. Unique, but
not weird and definitely easy to spell. I like it so much that I'm
not going to add any suggestions for a boy's name, 'cept of course
you still have to pick out a middle name.

Yes, Katherine Elizabeth Sorrells is quite long - how about Elizabeth
as a first name, with a one-syllable middle name?

    Elizabeth Ann Sorrells
    Elizabeth Leigh Sorrells
Elizabeth Renee Sorrells <- oops, Renee has 2 syllables, but I like it!

    Good luck!

    Hi David,

Your title really caught my attention because my son's name is Jonathan
and he has a sister - Emily Amanda. It is the common spelling and
    definitely not gender vague.

    Best of luck to you.

    Chris

PS She was born in November, too!
961.3Like any of these?AMCUCS::MEHRINGTue Sep 06 1994 17:0626
David,

Here are some suggestions to go with your criteria:

Samantha Jane Sorrells Steven James Sorrells
Hayley Madeline Sorrells	Brandon Jesse Sorrells
Abigail Haley Sorrells Derek Bryson Sorrells
Kimberly Helen Sorrells Benjamin David Sorrells
Amanda Mary Sorrells Zachary Arden Sorrells
Kelly Jane Sorrells Ryan James Sorrells
Megan Haley Sorrells Eric Bryson Sorrells
	Hannah Jane Sorrells
	Monica Haley Sorrells
	Erica Haley Sorrells

I really like the Haley/Hayley name for a girl, although it isn't exactly
"traditional" and is somewhat gender neutral, so you may not like it for one
of those reasons - then can use it for the middle name... I like Bryson better
for a middle name (the S seems a bit much with Sorrells and it also doesn't
complement Jonathan as well - just my opinion, of course).

By the way, what is your wife's name/middle name? I noticed you and your son
have the same middle name, perhaps you might consider using your wife's too?

Good luck in the search...

961.4my latest list...BIGQ::SORRELLSOh sure, another exciting dayWed Oct 05 1994 12:1923
Well, 5 weeks to go and still looking. I can't say that everything suggested
so far stuck with us, but it definitely helped the discussion along. If
anyone would like to play fill-in-the-blank or mix and match first and middle
names, below is the latest list we've talked about. Oh, and smoeone asked
what my wife's middle name was: she doesn't have one.

Haley Elizabeth	Sorrells
Elizabeth ____ Sorrells
Kathleen Haley Sorrells
Janet Elaine Sorrells
Caroline ____ Sorrells
Elaine _____ Sorrells
Christa/Krista ____	Sorrells
Abigail _____ Sorrells
________ Jane Sorrells

Benjamin David Sorrells
James Bryson Sorrells

961.6Elaina Christine Sorrells?40206::PLOURDEWed Oct 05 1994 17:3214
I like the names you've picked as well - I think I'd have to go with
Haley Elizabeth as my favorite too.

How about Elaina Christine? I don't know why... but it just popped
into my head and it sounds nice with your last name!

Also... don't narrow your list too far, I would select your favorite
2 boys names and favorite 2 girls names ... then you can pick the one
that best fits the baby and feels right.

    Best of luck!

Forgot to add input on boys names

    For boys names... hmmmmm
Some ideas - (I never really cared for the nickname "Ben", I like
    Brad better)

    Bradley Cole (or Paul)
    Bradford " "
    Adam Michael

That's all I can think of for now... If I get any more that I think
of I'll be sure to add them.
