733.0. "Paris and others" by OZROCK::RODRIGUES (Now we can all get some sleep!) Thu Sep 26 1991 22:48

Hi,

We are about to have a little Rodrigues in about a week...all plans
and contingency plans are now in force for the dash to the hospital..but I
digress.

One of the names we were looking at was Paris if it is a girl. I wont call
it unusual because its lovely. I tend to call it uncommon. After all,
your own child is far better than the any of the rest, right? :-)

I've done a quick search for the name in this conference and found references
to people being called it but no history...so here goes for anyone who's
interested.

Paris is actually greek. He (a boy's name originally) was the Prince of
Troy who kidnapped Helen from her husband Menelaus. After the 'thousand
ships' were launched to retrieve Helen, the Trojan war was started.
Apparently Achilles was involved on the greek's side and in the war
killed Hector (I forget the relation he had to Paris...father rings a bell)
and subsequently Paris' other claim to fame was that he killed the (almost)
invulnerable Achilles by spearing him in the heel (the only part of Achilles
that his mother didn't dip in the mystic river Styx which is apparently what
made him invulnerable).

The name, as such, was originally a boys name but over the years is now
favoured as a girls name although still used for both sexes.

I do like the uncommon names so here is a list of what we have come up with
so far....comments please? please please please?

Girl Boy
---------------------------------------------------
Paris Erin Bennet Alexander
Ceiledh Georgia Joshua Tiberius
Veronica Siobhan	Caelum Hannibal

Generals for the boys middle names (if you didn't guess)
Ceiledh pronounced Kay-Lee is the Gaelic spelling and means party or gathering
Siobhan pronounced Sher-von is also Gaelic
Caelum pronounced Kay-Lem is Latin for Chisel - strange you say yet its
haunting isn't it? I found it in a list of Constellation names. Funny where
you look, huh!

    Hi,
My first question would be, do you already have any children? It
would be good to try to match a second child's name to any other
    siblings.

For the names you offered, yes, they are uncommon. The spellings
and pronounciations of some you will have to correct over and over.
Of the ones you listed, my favorites would be Veronica Siobhan
for a girl and Bennet Alexander for a boy. I like Ceiledh but
would have no idea of how to pronounce it if I saw it in print
and would never come up with that spelling if I heard it. Same
thing goes for Caelum. I don't know if I like the sound of
Paris Rodrigues. If you really like Paris, how about Veronica
    Paris Rodrigues?

I have to say that I really like all the boys names that you have
picked out. As for the girls, I like Veronica the best. I also like
Paris but I'm not sure I like how Paris Rodrigues sounds together. In
the end though it is what you and hubby like the most that really
matters. Congratulations and God bless you all!!

...But.... I am the hubby :-)

Karl

Well, my wife's name is Patrice, so as for Paris Rodrigues, I guess
I'm used to Patrice Rodrigues...will this be too similar?
And, yes, this is our first!....of many ;-)
733.4Oops!PCOJCT::REISGod is my refugeThu Oct 03 1991 11:406
Sorry about that Karl, I didn't read the end of the original note. I
guess what you and the *wife* like the best is what really counts.
FWIW, the more I say Paris Rodrigues the more I like it myself.

    Good luck and God bless,
    Trudy
733.5INTERESTING NAMES!DPDMAI::SIMMONSPWed Oct 23 1991 17:0610
    KARL,

I'M AN OCCASIONAL READER OF THIS NOTE CONFERENCE AND HAVE WRITTEN A
COUPLE OF TIMES, BUT I HAD TO COMMENT ON YOUR CHOICE OF "PARIS" FOR A
GIRL. MY NAME IS "PARIS ELIZABETH" AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD IT MENTIONED
OR USED BEFORE. I'M KIND OF 50/50 ON THE NAME; IT'S NOT ONE THAT I
WOULD CHOOSE BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, IT IS DIFFERENT! I GET ALL KINDS
OF COMMENTS RANGING FROM "THAT SURE IS UNUSUAL" TO "I LOVE IT"!

LET US KNOW WHAT YOU DECIDE!
733.6The trouble with an agreeable wife...OZROCK::RODRIGUESNow I don't get any sleepMon Oct 28 1991 03:1825
...is that sometimes she's not too agreeable :-)

One time was when it finally came to the crunch on which name to choose

at 3:15am Monday the 7th October (sorry for the late reply..but I've been
busy :-) a little girl was born to Patrice and myself.
7 lbs 3 oz at birth with dark hair, grey/blue eyes and light olive skin.

Patrice was just waiting for the baby to be born to really decide on the
name, all the while keeping in mind the names we had chosen.

Once she was born, however, Patrice went all traditional :-(, oh well,
I tried....

anyway, we called her	Rosemary Ceilidh Rodrigues
at least I got Ceilidh in there :-)

See Ya in the conference for the next one ;-). I reckon I'll have the
say when we get a boy! (I think Saxon Sebastian sounds good)

Karl
PS. I'm going to have to say I do sympathise with all you other parents
out there ... because your baby is no longer the most beautiful...
    .....OUR'S IS!!!!!!!!!! :-)
733.7Oh Happy Day!!!PCOJCT::REISGod is my refugeMon Oct 28 1991 12:195
Congratulations Karl!! She sounds beautiful thats for sure!!! Too bad
we can't do pictures in notes. Enjoy her one day at a time as they grow
sooooo quickly. God bless you all!!!

733.8Just a question?SWSCIM::DIAZFri Nov 01 1991 12:5516
Congratulations.. she sounds beautiful. I have a question for you
having a latin lastname myself. I have been trying to stay away from
obvious ethic names and use a more generic name that is cross cultural.
Did that enter into any of your decision? I would classify Rosemary
as cross cultural (IMO) but not Ceileidh (forgive my spelling - I
    forgot to take note).

I'm struggling with names again myself (due in March). My husband tends
to lean toward Irish sounding names like yourself. And since our
daughter's name was basically his choice (Justine) I'm going to be
more forceful (or shall I say persuasive) with my choice on this one.
Since we have a ways to go we really haven't been talking about it. One
of us will throw out a name and the other says "no way" and we drop the
whole thing for a month or so. SO this is going to be very interesting.

Thanks for any thoughts on the process itself, Jan
733.9Someone had to give :-)OZROCK::RODRIGUESWhiskey sipping LiberalMon Nov 11 1991 21:1927
Well, as things would be, my wife and I both live in Australia, however,
my geneaology (sp?) is very complicated (Spanish, Portuguese, French...
don't ask...its taken me a lifetime to understand it :-)). My wife
on the other hand is 3rd generation Ozy from Irish stock.

As such, I've always wanted a name that is more uncommon than different,
although from my suggestions some of you would not agree, right :-)? I
didn't really want an obvious ethnic sounding name except that I love
the gaelic names because of their quaint spelling!

Try every name I thought of, Patrice would simply smile and say "maybe".
Come the very day her labour pains started (which was Sunday the 6th Oct
in the evening) I, being my normal jovial self, said "Hey, if the baby
is born tomorrow and its a girl we should call her Rosemary."
Alas, my wife went deep into thought and said yes...I said "but but but...."
but didn't get any further. The best advice anyone ever gave me was "NEVER
ARGUE WITH A PREGNANT WOMAN" and if you couldn't tell, we are both very
Catholic and the 7th October is the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary..
hence, Rosemary.

My wife liked it very much, but I REFUSE TO CALL HER ROSE!, If here name is
shortened, it will be shortened to Mary. No offence to all the Roses out there
its just that I knew a Rose, and this particular one wasn't very nice.
You know how it is!

Karl
733.10maybe I'll steal RosemarySWSCIM::DIAZTue Nov 12 1991 10:5614
Nice to hear from you Karl,

I love the name Rosemary and I particularly enjoy how you got her name.
That will be a nice story for little Rosemary to know too.

Maybe I steal the name Rosemary if I have a girl...

Rosemary Diaz ... kind of sweet

My current girl names are Carolyn and Samatha. My husband only grunts
at these. I have a long way to go so I should probably wait until I
go into labor like your wife and decide then.
