614.0. "Tough last name..." by CRONIC::ORTH () Wed Nov 28 1990 19:31

    We are due with baby #4 in June, and are beginning the name process
    (oh, no, not that again!)

    We have a tough last name here. It is "Orth", and it virtually
    eliminates any names that have a "th" in them. Makes you sound like you
    have a speech impediment. (The best one we've heard so far, in
    someon'es sillier moments, was "Thor Orth", although "Dorothy Orth", is
    a close second!!!!)

    Seriously now, we're running out of ideas. We already have a Joshua
    David, a Carrie Nicole and a Daniel Stephen. Short names are not
    great...sounds too choppy.

    We are incling toward Benjamin for a boy, with no ideas for a middle
    name at all. We are wavering between Emily and Hannah for a girl, agian
    with no clear middle name ideas. Keep in mind initials and Monograms
    (the middle letter would be "O", and could lead to some
    embarassing/funny/rude/etc. monograms).

    Any adn all ideas would be greatfully accepted!!!

614.1Suggestions...BPOV04::FARLEYWed Nov 28 1990 19:4810
    Here are some suggestions:

    Girl:                               Boy:
    Veronica Lynne			Jason Michael
    Rebecca Gail			Andrew Mark
    Colleen Marie			Brian James

    The girls' names were a lot easier to think up than the boys'!

    Karen
614.2My votesSTEREO::FAHELAmalthea CelebrasThu Nov 29 1990 11:115
    For a boy, I like Benjamin Michael (to borrow a bit from .1), and
    (completely taken from .1, but imitation is the sincerest form of
    flattery, Karen), for a girl I like Veronica Lynne.

614.3Michelle or Derek?CNTROL::STOLICNYThu Nov 29 1990 11:4919
    re: .1 Jason Michael .... nice name! (my son's!)

    One thing to consider with Benjamin is that in all likelihood, the
    child will be called Ben at some point .... consider how well you
    like Ben Orth.

    You're right, Orth is quite difficult to work with...

    girl: Emily Louise, Emily Jeanne sound pretty good I think
    	   I also think that Jennifer and Michelle both sound
    	   good with Orth for a last name.

    boy: I like Brian suggested in .1 or Ryan...I think that names
    	   that can't really be shortened are your best bets....
    	   how about Derek Michael?

    4th??  wow, I can't even imagine it....

614.4Stephanie and ?CUPMK::TAKAHASHIThu Nov 29 1990 12:566
    I kind of like the "S" sound with your last name. How about Stephanie
    for a girl's first name?

    I don't really like Benjamin with Orth. Sorry.

    Thanks for the suggestions...a few comments...

    We , too, like the name Rebekah (that spelling), and it was interesting
    that .1 paried it with Gail. My wife's sister's name is Gail and her
    daughter is Rebekah! And her son is Derek! We have virtually eliminated
    those names as a result.

    We like the name Michael, but not as a first name...too common.

    No Jennifer's or Jessica's...my sister's kids names.

    Benjamin is a family name, and that is why we may choose it (we also
    like it). Shortening to Ben is a definite possiblity, but hten we
    already have a Josh Orth, and a Dan Orth, both similar to Ben Orth in
    sound...short first, short last name.

    We tend toward old-fashioned or Biblical names, if that helps! It seems
    to me like we've looked at *all* the names in the world at this point!

    My wife likes Emily Caroline (the middle names of both my
    grandmothers), or Hannah Michelle (what Daniel would have been had he
    been a girl). I'm not sure. Opinions?

    Brian is a possiblity, Ryan is not really (just not keen on the name).

    Any and all help still apprecialted!

    Ahh, you like old-fashioned or biblical....how do you feel about
    Nathan(iel) or Miles or Jacob for a boy?

    Hannah Michelle sounds nice, Emily Caroline is okay in my opinion.
    I also like Rachel ____ Orth, do you?

    Re:  Benjamin Orth

    There is a singer (used to be with the Cars) named Benjamin Orr, and
    the name sounds great. (For the record, he was the only thing I liked
    about that group)

    I like the idea of Rachel...how about Rachel Michelle? Hannah Orth
    sounds awkward, IMO. I also like Emily Caroline Orth.

614.8Hannah and Rachel are great!36912::LILLYMontani Semper LiberiThu Nov 29 1990 19:3610
    I, too am a fan of Biblical names. Benjamin Orth sounds great to me. As
    for the girls names I have to admit that I'm a little biased because I
    have a Rachel Elizabeth and a Hannah Rose. I agree that Rachel sound a
    little better with Orth than Hannah but Hannah Elizabeth Orth sounds
    really nice. Hannah Michelle just doesn't seem to flow, maybe Hannah
    Marie or something like that. I also like Rebecca (or Rebekah) as
    suggested earlier. I know you'll pick a good one and four doesn't sound
    like too many to me.

    Sounds like Benjamin is a winner for you....I'll throw out a
    few middle names for your consideration:

    Benjamin Joseph (I think the nick name BJ is cute!)
    Benjamin Thomas
    Benjamin Michael
    Benjamin Jon
    Benjamin Matthew

    Carol
614.10Good suggestions!CRONIC::ORTHFri Nov 30 1990 18:4523
    Thanks, all you guys!

    Nathan is out, as is Benjamin *Matthew*....just don't like those "th's"
    with Orth.

    Carol...yes, BJ is cute...maybe we'll consider it. Or maybe Benjamin
    Jacob.

    Actually, I'm partial to Emily, too, at least with Orth. My wife really
    likes Hannah, but agrees it is a bit funny sounding with Orth.

    Don't think Miles is Biblical...could be wrong though. Anyway, I would
    think "pilgrim" everytime I heard it! No offense to anyone who has a
    Miles, please...that's just what it says to me!

    My in-laws are badgering my wife to name a boy either Benjamin *Hayes*
    Orth, (my wife's maiden name...no boys in the family to carry it on),
    or Benjamin *Vanderveer* Hayes (My wife's paternal grandmother's maiden
    name, which she has traced back about 15 generrations, and there are
    not more of, as far as we know.) What's the opinion on these?

    BTW, we don't succumb to badgering for badgering's sake, but if it
    sounds okay, we'd consider using it.
614.11CNTROL::STOLICNYMon Dec 03 1990 12:577
    Miles fell under the "old-fashioned" criteria, not the biblical...

    I really like Benjamin Hayes and think it's great to incorporate
    a family name (you did mention to pay attention to initials, so
    I'm sure you're aware that Ben Orth is BO!).

    KC,

    I used to live across the street from Ben Orr and he told me a secret
    (whoops! I sure look trustworthy now, don't I?) about his last name...
    It wasn't always Orr - he had it changed after the band started to do
    well. He was born with the name Orczowksi (sp?) which is pronounced
    or-ja-HOW-ski. Now, about Elliot Easton... :-)

    .0 -

    Benjamin Robert sounds nice to me. And how about Hannah Rae?

    Thanks for all the suggestions!
    No, not planning on having a #5, but there is always room for
    surprises....

    We sort of thought of Hannah Lee (Lee is my wife's middle name), and
    then her initials would be HLO, where I work....too corny!

    Rejected Hannah "R....." names, because of the pronunciation of the
    monogram (HOR).

    Mostly settled on Emily Caroline if it's a girl. Those are my tow
    grnadmother's middle names.

    Still undecided about a boy, but Benjamin will probably be what we go
    with, unless tremendous inspiration strikes.

    Anyone like the name Caleb? My wife does....I'm not so sure....

   > Rejected Hannah "R....." names, because of the pronunciation of the

    Yes, but wouldn't her initials be HRO? I'm not saying that should
    give her a middle name beginning with 'R', but if you really like
    an 'R' name, don't rule it out.

    Keep us posted on your upcoming arrival...

    - Kathryn

614.17on monograms....CRONIC::ORTHFri Jan 25 1991 17:0211
    Yes, her initials would be HRO, which is perfectly harmless. It seems
    to us, though, that girls are more likely to go in for the monogrammed
    type stuff like sweaters, jewelry, etc. I personally never went in for
    the monogrammed ties or hankies much, since my monogram would be DOA!
    Unpleasantly "dead" connotations there...!

    Will keep all posted! 20 weeks down and who knows how many more to go?
    (Probably only 18, as my wife is gestationally diabetic, and will
    likely be induced 2 weeks early)
