589.0. "I need some advice for Simon Anthony...." by RANGER::PELHAM (Life NEVER ends, it just changes) Wed Sep 26 1990 16:55

    Hi there,

we are expecting our first child in April 1991. We have decided on a
boys name and a girls name. Boys = Simon Anthony, Girls = Carmen
Violet. Our last name is Pelham. We have our reasons for chooising
these names, some are family reasons and others are just the plane fact
that we LIKE these names! Anyway, to keep it short, relatives and
friends are inquiring about which names we've chosen etc. When we tell
them the names they give us their opinions regardless of if we've asked
for their opinions! Some are good and some are bad :^(, basically I
could care less what others think. My only concern is that of the name
Simon. Now, I realize that when we were growing up in the 60's and
early 70's Simon Says & Simple Simon was a game we used to play in the
schoolyard etc. But before we chose this name, we checked into it as
far as kids are concerned now-a-days. We found that 9 out of 10 kids
don't even know who Simon Say is or Simple Simon for that matter. I
have taken into consideration the teasing factor (if any) etc, and
started to realize that if kids don't tease you about your name, then
they'll find something else to tease you about! Like the way you look,
talk, walk, laugh or eat your food!! I compare this to when I was
young and (my name is Melissa) kids found ways to make fun of my name
(and last name which was BROWN)!

So now I need to know, should I even worry about this any more, or
should I consider a different name due to the fact that Simon Says
exists more than I realize? We really have our hearts set on these
names, but we can't stand people who tell us it isn't something they'd
choose!!!! Well, it isn't their baby either!!

    Thanks for listening,

    Mel :^)

Hi, Mel! (I guess that answered my questions! ;^) )

FWIW, the names Simon Anthony and Carmen Violet sound WONDERFUL! And
personally, I think that "Simon says" might give the little tyke the
edge! (I knew a kid named Simon, and he was usually chosen to be the
Simon in "Simon says", and he LOVED it!)

    Stick with 'em!

Simon and Carmen are both great choices in my opinion. I don't
really see much teasing potential in Simon compared to so many other
names. Sure, there's Simple Simon and Simon Says but they're not
derogatory or anything. Kids will find *something* no matter what
you choose, so go with your heart!

    Good luck, carol

    Hi Mel,

Stick with what you want. Kids can find something to tease about on any
name. Simon is a wonderful name and after he's born no one will have
anything to say about it they'll be so thrilled with him.

I really like the names you picked. As far as "Simon" goes, I
agree with the other noters - kids will find something to tease
    about.

The only Simon I ever met was a sincere, kind, warm, thoughtful, gentle
man. As a result, the name Simon brings very good feelings when I
    think of it.

Well I have 8 &1/2 more weeks to go. If a boy, we are DEFINITE on
Simon Anthony (unless he is born on 4/13, which was my dad's b-day,
then he'll be named Simon Robert, my Dad's name was Robert). If a
girl, we are DEFINITE on Carmen Violet.

I'm hoping to go on 4/13, it would mean alot to me, and if he (my dad)
were still living, it would mean alot to him as well! He didn't have
any granchildren when he died. Mine is the first for my Mom!

    I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks,

    Mel :^)
