531.0. "SUGGESTIONS WELCOME" by PEKING::LYNGA () Tue May 22 1990 10:05

Hello. My name's Alison and I'm from Winnersh, Reading. I'm expecting
a baby in November 1990 and would welcome ideas for unusual names
for either boys or girls (although not too outrageous!) - I don't
know which it's to be yet!

    Cheers.

    Hi,

Is your last name Lynga? Alex would be nice for a boy. Alan is nice
too! I think something with Al - in it would be neat for a son -
    especially since your name is:

                                  AL - I - "SON"!!

For a girl: well... What's the Daddy's name??

531.2ALEXANDEROBSESS::PHELANTue May 22 1990 12:598
For a boy: I meant to write:

ALEXANDER LYNGA - you could call him Alex!

I really like Alexander! and your name being Alison is real neat!

    WHat do you think!?
531.3Alison Lyng from the U.K.PEKING::LYNGATue May 22 1990 15:4232

Thanx for the reply! I've only just started using Notes, so was
surprised at how quickly I got a reply.

Yes, I like Alexander - it's one of the names we have on our list
for boys. Clever idea about the Al-i-son thing - I never thought
of that before!! I also like Benjamin (Ben) and Samuel (Sam).

My surname is Lyng - it's Norwegian and we are the only family in
the United Kingdom with this surname, although I hear it's very
    popular in Norway!

The Daddy's name is Jon (Jonathan) Langer (we're not married) so
you can imagine the comical suggestions we've been getting from
people if we decided to have a double-barrelled surname (which we're
    not, by the way!), e.g.

    Lilian Lyng-Langer
    Leonard Lyng-Langer
    Lily Langer-Lyng

These gave us quite a laugh, as you can imagine, but I don't think
we'll be using them somehow!!! I'd like to use my own surname, Lyng,
for the baby's surname as it's so unusual and will be lost in the U.K.
as there are no boys in my family to carry it on.

Other names I've been toying with are Scarlett, Amy, Eleanor, Rosy,
Emily for girls ...... but I can't think of any boys names which
    particularly take my fancy!

Oh well, plenty of time yet!

Ya, I thought the Al-i-son thing was pretty good! Ha!

I do like Samuel Lyng too! That has a nice sound!
Samantha is pretty for a girl too.

Jonelle is very nice for a girl. (You'd get the JON in there for Dad)!

Jonison would be different for a boy or girl too!
(I may be getting carried away here)!!

I like Benjamin, Matthew, Mark, Paul, Mitchell.

For girls: I like: Jonelle, Rachel, Marni, Boel, Samantha,

    Well, you keep in touch!

I don't know how to pronounce your last name, so this suggestion
could make the name a bit sing-songy....

But how about Alanna for a girl. For a boy maybe, Trevor or Lance

    Anna

531.6RE: A E I O U PEKING::LYNGAWed May 23 1990 14:2920
Some of those suggestions were certainly unusual - I like Alanna
and Jonelle - do you know where they come from at all? Also Boel
    - I've never heard of that before.

I always get called by the nickname 'Ali' so I was thinking if I
called the baby Eleanor (if it's a girl) she may get called 'Ellie'
which could be a little confusing; there again, I also think it's
    quite sweet!

By the way, my surname is pronounced 'Ling'.

Jon likes the name Scarlett for a girl; I don't mind it, but it
conjures up visions of the petulant, foot-stamping tearaway played
by Vivien Leigh in 'Gone with the Wind'! He likes Alexander for
a boy but I have unpleasant associations of someone at school called
Alex who, unfortunately, I didn't get along with. Funny how links
with the past can effect you like that?

    Keep noting!

Well, I believe that Jonelle is somewhat French for Jon or John. I
always try to look at the Father's name and feminize it for a daughter.
My brother-in-law John's wife if pregnant and I suggested Johnelle. In
your case, I suggested Jonelle. (depending on how the dad's name is
spelt). My husband, unfortunately doesn't have a nice name to work
    with. (Edward) I couldn't imagine naming a little girl - what -
    Edwina, or Edna :( YUK!

Anyway, as far as Boel goes... I work with a woman who was
born and raised in Sweden. I think it may be 1/2 french also.
She did marry a french guy and her last name is now LaCroix. She is a
wonderful lady and real classy! I always thought her name was very
pretty and unique. and with her accent - the name has a nifty ring to
    it!

Eleanor is a "sweet" idea. I have a good friend who spells it Elinor and
we call her Eli. Kind of like Ali in Alison huh?

Well - you seem to be getting a few more suggestions also. Soon
Alison, you'll have about 50 replies to your note - THEN it gets even
    more difficult to decide!!

    Take care!!

I used to work indirectly with Boel and agree, she is a wonderful lady.

    Lori B.

P.S. I also love her name.

    Hi,

One of the notes earlier in here has a list of boys and girls names and
there is another one of just girls names. I found that really good to
go through. I can't remember the number and didn't have to time to
check it out. Type DIR and look through the list of titles if you get
    a chance.

A lot of the suggestions so far have been 'L' type names. eg Alanna,
Jonelle etc. Maybe you should look at names that don't have an 'L' in
    them. eg Jessica, Victoria, Jonine...

Another good place to look is the credits at the end of TV programs.
You just watch and all these names scroll in front of you.

    Good luck.

Jonelle is pleasant, but in England it does have one problem ...
it is the brand name of a chain of department stores called operated
be a company called the John Lewis Partnership.

    RE: NOTE 531

After reading your list of responses, this one popped into my head:

    ALEXA JONELLE (for a girl)

A friend of mine has a little girl, who is now four years old, and her
name is Alexa Michele. Everybody calls her by her full name, Alexa,
except for her brothers, who call her "Lexie".

She is a little blonde with the most beautiful blue eyes that I have
ever seen! Let us know what your final decision is.

    Congratulations to you and Jon!

    Thanks for all the replies.

I'm drawing up lists of names which I'm keeping in mind, but haven't
made any final decisions yet. I'm really keen on Rosie Eleanor
for a girl, though, and I've come to like the name Henry Paul for a
    boy.

A friend of mine had already decided on a boy's name and a girl's name in
advance of the birth, but when the baby was actually born, at the
moment of birth she held the little girl in her arms and a totally
different name came into her head, which she ended up calling the
baby. So all that deciding in advance might go out the window
    anyway!!

    Best wishes.

    Alison
