415.0. "Nicole - - - - Tibideau" by ECADSR::KAUPPI () Wed Aug 02 1989 14:19

I have a friend who is now 6 months pregnant and can't decide on
a middle name to go with Nicole. Any ideas? The last name is
Tibideau. Any suggestions would be great!

    Hi there,

Obviously, your friend's husband is French - perhaps there are
some interesting names in her husband's family that may give them
some ideas. Last weekend at a family cookout, I asked my husband's
aunt about their family. She came up with some really interesting
names and even more interesting stories about the people behind
the names. Maybe somewhere in her or her husband's background
there was a great-grandmother or great-aunt with a nice name and
and a little history that goes well with their last name and with
Nicole. I have a friend whose little girl is Nicole Marie. At
any rate, tell your friend good luck and have fun. I hope she
    finds something she likes.

I also like the name Nicole Marie, I wanted that name for my
daughter but it sounds terrible with my last name,"Coleman".

My sister in law is due this week, and if they have a girl her name
will be Nicolette. That sounds nice with Coleman! For short they
want to call her Nico, with the long eee sound.

    Hi,

you've probably already rejected the idea, but why bother with a middle
name at all. My opinion is that you got a great (smooth-sounding)
combination already. It get's my vote......why make things complicated
    for your good selves.

(I have two daughters (a third due November 11). All three will only
have first names - no middle. If one is careful, you can find a single
name that gives just as much flexibility (for shortened versions or
    nicknames etc) as two names.)

I agree with you that middle names are not always necessary. My
father would disagree with me, however, as he has gone through life
with no middle name and hated it. In fact, about ten years ago,
he added a middle initial even though it doesn't stand for anything.
(Like Harry S. Truman) See, he claims it never bothered him as
a child because he never had to deal with legal forms, etc. that
require you put in your middle initial. I said, "Aw, come on Dad,
it couldn't be *that* bad." But he claims he's actually had things
sent back to him because he "forgot" to put in his middle initial.
I think he may be exaggerating slightly...

BTW - we had this discussion because I told him I didn't plan on
giving my baby a middle name. He's strongly opposed, needless to
    say.

I know exactly how your father feels. And I don't think he's
    exagerating either.

I don't have a real middle name, never did. When I had to fill
out forms that asked for one, I'd say 'I don't have a middle name'
and people would think that I was lieing. They thought my middle
name was so bad that I didn't want to write it down and would tell
me so. I would get very defensive and let them know they were WRONG.
And to top it off, my name is my mother's name!

Now that I got married, I legally took my maiden name and made it
my middle name. So my legal name is now, Anna Ostiguy Bogart.
I sign stuff Anna O. Bogart and I feel much better.

    re:-1 (Anna)

You know, I don't even know why I said my dad might be exaggerating
because he's not the type to. I certainly understand even more
now after hearing your opinion, Anna. I've decided to definately
    give my kids middle names.

I too grew up without a middle name. My mother figured that JoEllen as
a first name was sufficient. I always got questioned about leaving
the middle initial off forms. When I married I took Fitzgerald as
my middle name. Now I sign all my forms JoEllen F. Scotland. I feel
    better....8^) jo

Boy! These replies can get off the track some times. The base note
asked for middle names that go with Nicole... The past few replies have
been the pros and cons of having a middle name at all!!

If there is still an interest in middle names that go with Nicole...

My husband and I are expecting our first child in October. If we have a
girl, it will be Nicole Frances Donahue.

Frances is Frank's mother's name, plus, Frank was named after his
father, Francis. Can you guess how Frances came about?

    Just another suggestion,
    Norma

Oh, how boring notes would be if people always stayed on the track...
True, the basenoter asked for suggestions for middle names, but one
noter *suggested* no middle name at all. Thus, a new discussion was
born. If we always rigidly stuck to the issue at hand, a lot of
interesting things might never come up. As for whether or not the
basenoter still needed suggestions... well, she said on Aug. 2, 1989
that her friend was six months pregnant. I think that means that
Nicole already has her middle name :-)
