394.0. "SELENE" by ELMAGO::SEARLEY () Wed May 31 1989 15:38

I am due Dec. 22nd and am considering for a girl's name-
Selene. (Pronounced sel-UH-nee) I believe I read this name in an
Isaac Asimov book, "The Gods Themselves", one of my favorite science
    fiction books.

My boyfriend's last name is Schweitzer, thus Selene
    Schweitzer. What a mouthful!

Has anyone ever heard this name before-pronounced this
way? Believe it is an unusual pronunciation-but want to make sure
it isn't real common in other parts of the country? (Have heard
    of sel-een or sel-en-a, but not Sel-UH-nee.)

No, I have never heard that pronunciation of Selene. Personally I
    prefer the Se-leene version.

And yes it is quite a mouthful!! Maybe a non-"S" name would be better,
like Vanessa? or Rebecca? How about Rachelle -- pronounced with a
soft "ch" sound like Rashelle? That is kind of nice, don't you think?

    Seleene -----

possible explanation follows - I doubt it, but the similarity makes
    it feasible ...

    from Saline meaning salt

Selene was the Greek goddess of the moon. Her name is
(according to my dictionary) pronounced suh-LEE-nee. I
distinctly remember hearing the name prounounced suh-LEEN
however. One thing you might want to consider is spelling
it differently to reflect the pronunciation -- selunee ???
Another thing to consider, though: is that really the way it's
pronounced? Typically, when you emphasize a syllable, you
give it some stronger sound than the schwa (the "uh" sound).
So, should it really be se-LUH-nee or suh-LEE-nee? Some
other variants to consider (all of which eliminate spelling
and pronunciation problems pretty well): Selina, Selena, and
Celine (which is really a pet form of Marcelline, but at
	least gets the pronunciation across).
