374.0. "Opinions solicited - "Sheri"..." by BITS1::HAGEN () Wed Apr 19 1989 18:28

Has anyone ever heard of and/or like the names Sherilyn (rhymes with Marilyn)
or Sherilee (rhymes with Sara Lee)?????

I've always liked the name Sheri for a girl, but I was never crazy about
Sheryl or Cheryl (too common), and Sheri seems like a nickname to me. I can't
find either names in my names book.

Do you think Sherilee sounds too much like the fattening-frozen-food maker?

Can you think of other alternatives?

How about Shaina which is Hebrew for beautiful?

RE .1 : I asked for opinions, not BAD attempts at humor.

RE .2 : How is Shaina pronounced? Shay-na?

I like Sherilyn better than Sherilee. I'd be interesed in knowing
what Shaine sounds like, too. How about, Sherlene (rythms with
    Arlene)?

Yes it is pronounce Shay-na but will probably get shortened to Shane.
I still think its pretty and unusual.

I knew a girl in gradeschool whose name was Sheree (sp?).
It rhymes with Marie. She was very pretty and popular--everyone
loved her name too, but I've never heard it since then.

Let us know what you pick.

    Sheryl

These are basically just coinages. The "sher" part comes
from a phonetic spelling of "Cherie." The "lyn" is just
a common feminine dimunitive: Jacqueline, Marilyn, Caroline,
etc. The "lee" (or "ly" or "ley") is also another common
ending: Ashley, Shirley, etc. It originally meant "meadow"
and was used just for surnames (Ashley, for example, was for
the family whose long ago ancestor lived on "the meadow near
the ash trees"). The names became popular probably just
because people liked the sound of them (they sound vaguely
	French and are rather "pretty").

	P.S. I like Shaina!

I like Sherilyn with Sheri as a nickname.

You might also consider Sharon. I have a friend named Sharon who
goes by Sheri, so you would still have that as a nickname.
