371.0. "JOY - RONNA - LUANN" by USWAV1::BRADISH () Wed Apr 12 1989 15:56

    I think that unusual names are nice for girls. But I don't think
    a boy would particularly like to have a "strange" name.

    Also, there will ALWAYS be ANOTHER one with that name at some point
    in life. I think when you like a name that you feel is uncommon,
    you are prone to hear it because you are now "turned on" to it whereas
    before you didn't care, so it didn't jump out at you.

    BTW, I have not seen my name here JOY. I get the JOY TO THE WORLD
    at Christmas and it annoys me. I was born in August. I am the
    fourth girl. Everyone was like "oh no another girl", so my mother
    thought she ought to name me something "joyous".

    I have sisters RONNA, LUANN, BARBARA and brother JOHN (which is
    becoming uncommon because everyone thinks it is ordinary).

371.1Hi Joy!VAXWRK::LANZAThu May 04 1989 14:2417
    Hi Joy,

    My name is the same as yours. I never like it either until a couple of
    years ago. My relatives kept calling me Joyce though which I dislike
    even more. Fortunately, a boy in my class in grammar had the name of
    Noel, so we both got lots of teasing and such in school. I now collect
    christmas cards with just JOY on them and anything else for christmas
    that has JOY on it. I even have friends that collect things for me!
    I must say that my parents were going to name me others that are not on
    my top-10 list, such as Richardina (first born and named after my
    father), Georgianna (expected birth date was 22 Feb. for George
    Washington), or Rita (after my godmother). Because my maiden name is
    rather unusual, my mom decided on Joy Lee (maiden name is Plouffe).
    She decided that short names were best for our last name.
