334.0. "Names that are *too* common" by APEHUB::STHILAIRE (Remember, neatness counts) Fri Jan 20 1989 18:39

There are certain names that have been used over and over again,
down through the years, and I am sick and tired of them. In view
of that I would like to request that nobody reading this file ever
name a child one of the following names. They have been overused
and should be retired forever. Afterall, the opportunity to decide
what another human being will be called throughout life is very
exciting, and should not be wasted on the unimaginative!

    For Boys:
    --------

    Robert (Bob, Rob, Bobby)
    Richard (Dick, Rick, Rich, etc.)
    John (Jack)
    James (Jim, Jimmy)
    William (Bill, Billy, Will, Willy)
    Steven/Stephen (Steve)
    Ronald (Ron, Ronnie)
    Michael (Mike)
    Charles (Charlie, Chuck, Chip)
    Donald (Don)
    Thomas (Tom, Tommy)
    Joseph (Joe)
    David (Dave)
    Edward (Ed, Eddy)
    Paul
    Daniel (Dan)
    Peter (Pete)
    Jerry
    Al
    Fred
    Frank

Every other man in the United States is named one of the above names.
     It's time to move on.

    For girls:
    ---------

Kathy (Cathy, Kathleen, Kathryn, Catherine, Katherine, etc., etc.)
    Susan (Sue)
    Debbie (Deborah, Debra)
    Linda (Lynn)
    Mary/Marie/Maria
    Ann (Anne)
    Karen
    Diane (Diana)
    Donna
    Joan
    Jean
    Carol
Elizabeth (Liz, Betty, Beth, Betsy, Lizzy)
    Judith (Judy)
    Gail (Gale)
    Barbara (Barb)

    New additions, already over-used:

    Jennifer

    Jason

Let's not waste a moment of creativity by being mundane.

with my name. I felt as though my rights had been violated!)

You didn't mention your first name, so I'll have to say Hi, Sthilaire,
Anyway, I agree with you in somes ways about the over used names,
though I think you mentioned every possible name! What's left?
Why don't you give people some alternatives? Alot of the names
you listed as OVERUSED, may have been at one time. But, for example,
I grew up with quite a few girls named Elizabeth and Mary, though
I very rarely hear of a child being named that today... Jennifer,
YES, But then again I didn't know any Jennifer's in school. It
started as different, then over used, now not many people name their
children Jennifer, One day, they will again.

Oops, sorry, Lorna. Just looked back and noticed you had mention
your name in other replies. I usually always try to start off a
message with the person name Im writing to and on the *too common*
message, there was only your last.

    Sorry again,

By the way, I think LORNA is a very pretty name.

    Lorna,
    I agree with you.
I'm expecting in April and we've been trying to come up with
a boy's name that begins with "R" that is not as common as
ROBERT, RICHARD, or RONI. However even after looking in a name
book I could not find a name with "R" for a boy that isn't distasteful.
Any ideas? Girls names have a better selection.
I don't want my kid to have 3 others in his class of 20
with the same name! then the teacher will have to come up with
a weird naming mechanism to distinguish each kid.

Tough choice, even tougher when I have to get my husband to agree
    with me.
My name is Beverly. Although I never liked it when I was growing
up, out of 600 kids in my graduating class I was one of only two!!
WOW. It's good to be unique.

    You can try my name.

    Roger

I was nineteen before I met another Roger, and the name is still
pretty rare. I've actually met two different guys who spelled
it Rodger, which is completely wrong as far as I am concerned.

I've been happy with the name.

Of course, taste in names is completely subjective.
334.5Boy's "R" namesCSC32::MA_BAKERMon Feb 27 1989 20:372
Raymond, Randy, Russell, Rory, Roy, Raleigh (yes I went to Jr High
with a Raleigh and have never met another), Reid -- to name a few.
334.6Please not too unique!SKIWVA::FSCNOWed Mar 29 1989 13:3413
How about Riley? Or Roger, thats my husband's name. And yes I agree
with Lorna and Beverly it is good to have a unique name but please
don't go overboard as my mother did. My name is Larri (sounds just
like the guys) Cynthia (I go by Cindy). My mother always told me she went to high
school with a girl named Larri but I always accused her of making
that up to make me feel better. When I was in labor my labor nurse
said "I went to high school with a girl named Larri". It turned
out that this lady had gone to high school with my mother and they
really did have a classmate named Larri. Needless to say I had
to apolygize to my mother but I did not name my daughter anything
    weird.
