322.0. "WHAT GOES WITH "SMITH"?" by WAV14::KREA () Wed Dec 14 1988 16:51

    I am due to have a baby in July, I'm all set with a boy's name. But
    I'm looking for suggestions if it's a girl. I'm looking for something
    that is pretty but unique and not commonly used. The name should
    fit with "Smith"  Any suggestions?????

    My last name is Smith, and when I had my daughter I liked "Emily"-
    that was 5.5 years ago, before it started becoming popular, but
    my husband didn't...I still like it...we settled on Diane. One
    thing I did was take the phone book and look at the different first
    names...there's a pretty good selection...let us know what you
    decide...

    Karen,

    I think Laura Ann goes rather nicely with Smith....Don't you?
322.3Here's one that's differentHYEND::JRHODESMon Dec 19 1988 12:213
    If you are looking for unique, not common.

    I once knew a Lucinda Smith

    i think 'emily' and 'diane' both sound fine. i know a 'deanna'
    and a 'luanne'. with the last name being monosyllabic, i would
    tend to go with a multi-syllable first name. good luck if you're
    looking at middle names.
322.5LDP::CORCORANTue Dec 27 1988 13:356
    I would think ANYTHING with more than once syllable would go with
    Smith??.....

    (BTW - I think Emily is a nice name, although I may be partial
    since that's my niece's name, but spelled - Emilee)

    Well, one would think that almost any name would go...but I also
    liked Sally....Sally Smith? Sounds like Dick and Jane, and family.
    For a boy, I liked Zachary...remember Dr. Smith from "Lost in Space"?
    His first name was Zachary...

    Almost any name sounds okay with Smith. But, what I would do is
    look in both the Digital phone book and a large city directory and
    see what are the most common first names for Smith's, and then avoid
    them. Smith is such a common name that I would want to avoid any
    common first name. (Once I had to call somebody named Bob Smith
    in Worcester, MA, and that was all I had to go by...forget it..)

    I agree that Lucinda is a pretty name. I also like Lorinda. I
    bet there's quite a few Laura Smith's in the world already.

322.8A DIFFERENT TYPE OF NAMEWAV14::KREAFri Jan 06 1989 15:085
    I'm looking for something different that's not too common, but at
    that same time something people would think about. Like Caitlin,
    Brinna, everyone has Meghan. With having the last name as Smith, I
    do want the name to stand out.

I am a Lorie Smith but I get called Lora Lee a lot. Don't ask me why, seems
like people think that is a cute name.

    It's a shame the basenoter didn't let us know what she chose! I
    married a Smith and although we're not having a baby at the moment we
    do intend to and I've wondered what on earth we'll call them. I also
    like the idea of having a less-commonly used name.

    For a girl I like Stacey Smith (a la Paul Young's wife, it's also my
    sister's first name).

322.13More Smith IdeasHYEND::PMTEMPWed Nov 13 1991 18:5418

    I am engaged to a "SMITH" and we have talked a lot about different
    possible names when we have children. My name is very oldfashioned,
    but goes well with Smith. I will be Anna Smith. Sounds like a pilgrim
    to me!!

    For girls, I would like to put an unusual name before Smith. My dad's
    mother was named Lela and I like that a lot. Simple, but still
    different. For a boy, he would like something STRONG sounding and I
    would like something not-too-common and a little elegant. We sort of
    decided on Alexander. I love Alex and it's a short, strong name.
    Sounds like the devil will be at his elbow!

    Hope this helps with the Smith issue. Everyone thinks you're so
    lucky with a simple last name and we spend all this time trying
    to liven it up.!!

322.14Here I am again!PEKING::SMITHS2The Pink Pedaller!Thu Feb 04 1993 13:1616

    Well, I wrote .12 in August 1991, and now here we are expecting our
    first baby! We haven't really discussed names yet, although we still
    both want something that's not too common for either a boy or a girl.
    We'll probably spend the whole summer arguing about it!

    The only thing we're certain of is if it's a boy his middle name will
    be Thomas, as that's a family name. I like Jake for a boys first name,
    but I'm not sure if it goes too well with Thomas.

    Our names are Samantha Louise (Sam) and Andrew Thomas (Andy). Any
    suggestions?

    First, congratulations.

    Second, I think Jake Thomas sounds great together.

Sam,

Here are some that come to mind that sound good with Smith (I like something
2 or 3 syllables for girls and 2 for boys, although Jake Smith does have
a blunt, strong sound to it...):

Natalie			Nathan
Lydia			Gordon
Tabitha			Jared
Veronica		Brendan
Audrey			Dillon
Erica			Garrett
Rochelle		Austin
Alina			Ryan
Jamie			Dexter
Melina			Clinton
Adrienne
Hilary
Madeleine
Angeline

Sabrina
Abigail

Congratulations and good luck!

    Congratulations!

    I don't know why, but ever since my "soap opera watching days" I like
    the name Quinton for a boy. I think Quinton Thomas Smith sounds nice
    (very distinguished!) You could call him Quint for short.

    I also like for boys:

    Jared Thomas
    Martin Thomas
    Justin Thomas
    Nathan Thomas
    George Thomas

    For girls:

    Angela
    Melody
    Samantha
    Rebecca
    Alysha

    Best of Luck!

    Well, we've more or less settled on Jacob Thomas for a boy (we'd call
    him Jake).

    If it's a girl her second name will probably be Louise, as that's my
    second name, my niece's and was my grandmother's name as well. As for
    first names for girls, we still can't agree on anything. I like
    Natalie, but Andy isn't so keen. Any more ideas would be appreciated.

322.19Another JAKE 5/25/93!!HOCUS::PERETZSTue Jun 01 1993 20:195
    Ex DECie David Rosenberg and his wife Fran had a baby boy May 25, 1993
    and they named him Jacob Matthew Rosenberg for Dave's Grandfather. I
    attended the Bris this morning and all is well, Jake is beautiful!
    Dave worked in the VMS group on Spit Brook for any who might remember
    him.
