311.0. "Jael" by PTOMV4::FULTON (It's all just ones and zeros!) Thu Oct 06 1988 18:25

My wife has an unusual first name: Jael (pronounced like jail).

It is from the Bible (Judges) and has an interesting story behind
    it.

I have heard of very few others with that name, none which was
pronounced the same; the others were pronounce Jay-el.

Jael has two brothers and one sister. All of their names, both
first and middle are Biblical; the first names all start with A,
the middle names with A, and their last name starts with M, which
    makes them all JAM's.

What _is_ the story behind Jael's name?

And what are her siblings' names?

Well, its been a while, but I will relate what I remember.

It seems there was an enemy of the state named Sisera (I believe)
who was trying to hide from the authorities. He came to Jael (Jay-el)
and asked for refuge. She took him in and fed him and instructed
him to roll up in a rug to hide. When he went to sleep, she drove
a tent stake through his temple. (My father warned me not to go
    to sleep.)

That may be the hebrew pronunciation. Can anybody confirm?
311.5Yaeli as in Israeli...JEREMY::RIVKAWed Nov 09 1988 03:094
The hebrew pronunciation is ya-el.Infact all the Yael I know (mind
you it's quite popular here) spell it with a "Y" (yael).

    Rivka.
