298.0. "Stan" by HOMSIC::DUDEK (It's a Bowser eat Bowser world) Wed Sep 07 1988 21:06

What do you think of Stan as a name in its own right, rather than a nickname for
Stanley, Stanford, etc... We are expecting our first next month and currently
have a list of 3 girls names and 5 boys names. Stan is still on the list,
despite comments from both sides of the family, because we both love the
nickname, Stosh. I think Stosh comes from the Polish for Stanley, Staciu
(spelling???). While "Dudek" is a Polish name and, I think, could stand a
strong Slavic name with it, we're hesitating to name the child Stanislaus or
Staciu.

So - what do you think of "Stan"? Also, what kind of connotation does Stanley
have for you? And would it be better if it were Stanleigh? Also, does it seem
right to give baby a certain name because you love the nickname? Last but not
least, does anyone know the correct spelling of Staciu?

    Susan,

Well, this may be an "off the wall" suggestion, but if you like
the name Stosh, why don't you just name the baby Stosh!!! Actually,
    I prefer this over Stan.

Many of today's names were "once upon a time" nicknames! Start
    a new trend!!!

    What about Stanford?

Personally, I'd stay away from the -leigh ending for a boy. I think
    it looks feminine.

-Tracy (who may be prejudiced because her daughter's name ends in
            -leigh)

    Oops, you already mentioned Stanford.

I think you should just name him Stan, if that's what you like.
