263.0. "Monya" by PHENIX::SWITCHBOARD () Thu Jul 14 1988 15:59

I have an unusual name. My name is Monya (pronounced like Tonya with an 'M').

My mother knew a woman named Monya and liked the name, so that's what I got.
About six years ago, I met another Monya. She is Russian and said that Monya is
a fairly common Scandanavian name. The American equivalent is Mary which happens
to be my mother's name.

My full name is Monya Lissette Cain hence I have been and am still teased.
i.e.:
	mononeucleosis mon-omial monkey
	money mon-opoly mon-otonous
	mono-tone ammonia pnemonia
	mona lisa monty hall

	gazette lizzie (as in Bordan)

	raisen candy

My favorite nick-names were given to me by my ninth grade health teacher, Mr.
Tanner. He called me Miss Mental (Monya-mental). He also called me Sugar which
was pretty embarrassing sometimes because of the raised eyebrows we received
from people who didn't realize that my last name is Cain. My brother had it
worse though when he had Mr. Tanner. It is infinately more embarrassing for a
guy to be called sugar by a male teacher (or any other male) than it is for a
girl.

Despite all the teasing, I grew up to be a well adjusted person (except for my
occasional nervous twitches) who has a good sense of self and humor (which are
the same thing sometimes).

I never minded having an unusual name and hope to someday have children to pass
that gift on to. If you have any suggestions for unusual names, please let me
know.

Thanks,
Mon
