249.0. "Help with meanings - Lisa/Stephen" by BPOV08::GRAY () Mon Jun 27 1988 12:29

I am a new reader of this notes file, as well as a new expectant mother.

My husband and I expect our first child this winter.

We have already chosen the names; Lisa Rose (named after my grandmothers)
or Stephen Michael (we just like the name). We think they both go
 nicely with Gray.

 My questions are:

 1) What do these names all mean?

 2) Is there any difference in meaning between Stephen and Steven?

I would appreciate any info you might have.

Stephen - (Greek), crowned with glory. I don't know if there is
a difference between Stephen and Steven. (my son's name is Esteban,
    which is Stephen in spanish)

Michael - (Hebrew), Reflecting the spriritual truthfulness of God

I couldn't find any thing on Lisa, but perhaps it is a derivative
    of Elizabeth?

Rose - (Latin), Beauty of the flower.

Your local library probably has better reference books that can
give you further meanings on these names.

My SO's name is Stephen, and I always liked the name. Most of his
friends and family call him 'Steve,' but I have called him Stevie
from day one. I am usually drawn to more uncommon names, but I'm
willing to bet my firstborn son (if I ever have kids!) is Stephen
    Joseph Jr.

By the way, his (only) brother's name is Michael.

My dad's name is Stephen. However when he went to get his birth
certificate a couple of years ago, it was Steven. He had to go through
lots to get the certificate changed. Just keep them the same.

I'm a Lisa, although I spell mine Lysa, and the name is indeed a
derivative of elizabeth. It has been defined in several books I've
seen as "promise of God". Its one of the few names that is universal
having similiar representatives in every nation in the world. Its
been very common in my generation, so I'm hoping it becommes less
so now. Lisa Rose is a lovely name.

A coworker of mine has a daughter Lisa (Lisa Stephanie, in fact)
who is almost two. As pointed out in -.1, Lisa is the same in many
languages--which is one of the reasons it was chosen for her. Lisa's
mom is from Montreal and is bilingual (as they hope Lisa will be).
