I wasn't able to find your name in my baby name book but I have
seen the name before. It was in a book that took place in Ireland
in about the 16th century. I always assumed that it was Gaelic.
Please let me know if you find out anything, I kind of like it myself.

The name Niall or Neil is Irish and does mean champion.
The most famous bearer of the name was High King of Ireland Niall
    of the nine hostages.
He was called of the nine hostages because he held the oldest child
of nine tributary kings to ensure their obedience and good behaviour.
Niall was High King during the transition period between the old
    religion and Christianity.
He is the progenitor of the Royal family of U'Niall or as it is
    more commonly called O'Neil.
