204.0. "Malyssa...Melissa..." by MTBLUE::WEBSTER_THER () Thu Apr 07 1988 16:28

    Hi, I'm new to the babynames note file and I am expecting our first
    child in May. My husband and I are set on a boys name, but don't
    agree over the spelling of the girls name we finally decided on.
    The name is Malyssa...or is it Melissa...or how about Malissa? When
    I asked my husband to spell the name he said Malissa....but I like
    the Y instead of I.

    What do you think? The girls middle name would be Lee. Just so you
    know we decided on Joshua Milo for a boy.

    Thanks

    Theresa

    I vote for the default "Melissa."

I also vote for Melissa.

Malyssa may cause some mispronounciation: Maly-issa

    I vote Melissa or Melyssa.... People call me 'Mel' for short...
    I don't really like it, but 'Mal' is MUCH worse... I remember being
    teased in school with that one.

204.4Definately Malyssa!!BOSHOG::PROVASOLIFri Apr 15 1988 14:503
    I vote for Malyssa, I think it's pretty. I like unique names, or
    average names with unique spellings. I think Melissa is to plain
    and ordinary.

    Re .4, While the name Melissa has recently come into very common
    usage, I still think it looks beautiful written and sounds very
    pleasing to the ear. I also prefer uncommon names, but the name
    Melissa will never seem "plain and ordinary" to me.

    HI! My name's Melissa and I've always loved my name (even if I do
    say so myself). I think that Melyssa looks a little odd and I agree
    that Malissa would be nicknamed "Mal" Ugh!

    Anyway, I hope you do call her Melissa. It is supposed to mean "bee"
    or "sweet honey".

204.7"MELISSA IT IS"BTO::COLEMAN_DThu Jan 19 1989 20:084
           I named my daughter "Melissa Christine", I will always
           love that name. My mother and I also call my daughter
           Missy,for short.   DLC

    Our baby is due in February, we have decided that if it is a girl it
    will be named Melissa. We thought of following it with Gwyneira
    Margaret but could you imagine the stick the child would get with the
    initials M.G.M.
