140.0. "OUR OWN NAMES" by MPGS::COLLAMATI () Tue Oct 13 1987 16:32

                        OUR OWN NAMES

I know this file is about BABYNAMES, but babies grow up to be
adults. So, I was wondering how many adults actually like their
names? If you don't, what would you change it to? Why?

I like my name. It's better than what my mother had picked out.
( My great-aunt made her change it. ) My mother had picked out Marlene
    or Tammico. ( Personally.......YUCK !! )

My name is Kimberly Ann. The only thing that I would change
is my middle name. I'd add an e to it.

Kimberly Anne looks better than Kimberly Ann.

    	But that's just my opinion.

140.1"Carol"CSC32::JOHNSYes, I *am* pregnant :-)Tue Oct 13 1987 20:0212
I like my name very much, and have wondered why people don't name
more children "Carol". I like it because it is not very unusual,
but not common enough that I grew up being one of 3 or 4 Carol's
in the class (like all the Cathy's and Mark's I knew).

Whenever I have wanted a change in names, then I have had it, since
my close friends and some of my friends in the Ozarks occasionally
call me CarolAnne, and I have been called Carolyn by people as well.
I like Carol Anne; Carolyn is okay, but it's not my name. I have
known some Carol Jean's who occasionally went by "CJ".

I didn't start liking my name until I was in my early 20's. It
wasn't until then that I realized how pretty it really is. It
is pronounced Mar (as in car) ee e tu.

When I was younger, I always wanted a more common name, I thought
it would make me fit in better. I was extremely shy and had a hard
time making friends. After I started school and had to hand in
all those papers, I went by my nickname Etta. Marietta Manning
was just too dang long to write on all those papers. Now I get
to write Marietta Stephenson on checks which is even worse.

I have often thought of trying to go back to my real name, but
I have been going by Etta for so long and people are always
mispronouncing Marietta. I don't know if I want to go thru all
that correcting. Maybe someday I'll do that.

    Marietta Anna Stephenson

I like my name even though it is very common, I am named after
my grandmother so i guess that may be why. My name is Christine
Roberta..My future husband's name is Robert so I guess we will
definitely have a Roberta, Jr. My mom's name is Roberta and
everyone calls her Bobbi and it suits her perfect (she is very
    petite)

I also like my name very much. My only problem is that EVERYONE
spells it the more common way. My name is Hollie Beth and everyone
spells it Holly, which is the correct spelling for the flower.
I have even resorted to spelling it "Holly" in most cases just because
it is easier and not so confusing to people.

I have always liked my name because it wasn't very common at all.
I think I have met a total of about 4 other Hollie's. I have met
a few more that spell it Holly, but not many with my spelling at
    all.

140.5I LIKE IT. HOWEVER IT'S KATHERINE! NOT KATHY!NUTMEG::PANAGEOTESMon Oct 19 1987 14:5020
Since we are expecting our first baby in March I am really enjoying
this conference. Glad to that this subject was brought up. My
first name is Katherine and middle name is Elvira (grandmothers
first name I am lucky that this is only my middle, and only use
the initial.) My maiden name was Keller, now it is Panageotes a
mouthful and long to write out. However I do prefer to be Katherine
and not Kathy. People do insist on Kathy and sometimes it is hard
to always correct them. Anyway now I have this thing about people
taking a perfectly nice "long" name and automatically attaching
a nickname. How do others feel about that? Any suggestion on a
first and middle name that goes with Panageotes (it is Greek) and
    pronounce Pana-joe-tes.

My husband (Mark) brought up the name Kimberly (?) Panageotes, I
keep thinking about it and want to ask Kimberly the originator of
this subject (our own names) do people automatically call you Kim?

    Regards,
    Katherine E. Panageotes

I like my name, too. It is almost impossible to misspell or
mispronounce. It is not an unusual or "wierd" name, but it
is not all that common either. However, sometimes I have
a hard time convincing people that my full name is Frank
	and not Franklin or Francis.

re .2 -- did you know there is a town in Ohio called Marietta,
	home of Marietta College?

    believe you.

140.8Stacie Karen WatkinsPLANET::WATKINSDon't mind me-low brain cell countWed Oct 21 1987 17:1726
My name is Stacie Karen. When I was little, I didn't like my name
at all. i even went so far as to tell my mother that I was changing
my name to 'Stephanie' when I was five. My mother handwrote (I
could only read printing at the time) a note to show to everyone
that said: "Stacie wants to call herself Stephanie this week. Please
    humor her."

Now, I love it. It's funny, when I introduce myself to people,
they always say "You *look* like a Stacie!" For along time I wondered
exactly what a "Stacie" looked like. Now I know. If you've ever
seen a Stacie in any movie or tv show, she's usually between 16
and 18, kind of a wild dresser, and says things such as "Like Wow!"
and "Like, wicked cool!" That's me!

Well, I'm 19 now, and I'm trying to sound 'more professional' these
days, but I definitely am a "Stacie."

Hmm...I wonder if my name "ages well." Ever heard of a 75 year
old "Stacie ?" Didn't think so. I could always just be Anastasia,
like my grandmother and aunts insist on calling me...

Re.4--Hollie, I know where you are coming from. I don't know of
anyone that's ever spelled my name correctly without my help.

My name is Judy Ann. No, not Judith. I had the hardest time trying
to tell my teachers that my name is not Judith. My parents liked
Judy, but not Judith. I don't care for it much myself. I don't
think it's a very common name. I've met maybe 6 others. When I
was in high school, though, there was another Judy in just about
all my classes. I don't care for my middle name though. It seems
like 85% of the female population has Ann for a middle name. Maybe
if it had an 'e' I'd like it more. Who knows. I have it because
my mom's middle name is Ann. She almost got her grandmother's name
for a middle name. Sybil. Could be worse I guess.

Just for the heck of it, I have my kid's names all picked out
(but I'm a long way from having kids. I'm only 20!!)

Most people usually call me Kim, but sometimes people ask me which
I prefer, and I always say Kimberly. I think it sounds more
adult. I've been called Kim, Kimmy, and even Kimeth.(So I have
weird friends!) I also think Kimberly sounds much more feminine
than Kim. I don't get upset if people call me Kim, but I prefer
Kimberly. My great-grandmother always called me Kimberly Ann.
All the time. I liked it!

I've always liked my name and have never complained to my parents about
it. My name is Lori. I was almost to be a Kimberly but my mom
said that there were too many named that already (and not Lori?).
Anyways, I also have the problem with people always misspelling
my name also because there are so many ways to spell it.

    Nonetheless, I love it!

I really like my name, Jeanne (pronounced Jean). What I do not
understand is how many people can mispronounce it! I've been called
Joanne, Jean-ie, and Je-anne. What was the most surprising was
when I moved south of the Mason-Dixon line, people wanted to spell
my name GENE, ugh! Gene is the male version of my name, and I
certainly do not look or sound like a man!

    Just call me Jeanne :v)

140.14Lorelei BelleCURIE::MPTAGThu Nov 05 1987 16:4822

My name is Lorelei Belle. No, it's not southern. It's actually
german. Lorelei is a flower, river and song in Germany. The Lorelei
were also in "Tales of Ulysses", a book of myths I read in high
school. They were beautiful "sea godesses(sp), mermaids, etc"
that would sing beautiful songs to put the sailors in a trance.
Then the ships would crash on the shore and the "mermaids" would
    consume the men.

Belle is actually short for Bellezina, my great grandmothers name.

I've always loved my name, because I'd never met another Lorelei,
until a month or so ago. Then, a woman named Lorelei came to my
church. Now there are two of us, and it feels really strange to
hear my name called and someone else answer.

Besides, with a last name like Smith, my mom really had to be creative.
Some of my sisters names are Annemarie Elise, Suellen Jennie, and
    Roselinda Grace.

My name is Janet, middle name Elizabeth (Janet = Scottish form of
Jane, female version of John). I like my name, but can't stand
being called Jan, I don't know why, the name just doesn't seem right
    for me.

My sister's name is Rosalind Ann and she hates it! My parents don't
like it much either. Their excuse is that they were sure she was
going to be a boy (called Richard Anthony) and Rosalind Ann was
all they could think of in a hurry. She was called Rosy when
she was younger but prefers Roz now she's grown up and sophisticated.
She also wishes her Ann had an "e" on the end.

My brother is Robert Alexander (Robert to the family, Rob to his
girlfriend, and Bob to everyone else - I never know who to ask for
when I phone him!) We both have Scottish names, even though we're
not Scottish but English. I think our parents (Gerald and Irene)
did OK with me and my brother's names but slipped up with Rosalind
(though I think Roz is nice).

My husband is Stephen John (Steve). I like his name, but perhaps
I'm biased because I like him!

I think it will be years before we have any little Rumbelows, just
as well, it will take us ages to think of something nice to go with
    Rumbelow.

    Hi,

It's quite interesting to see what everyone has to say
about something they usually had no choice about...their names!

My first name is "Jeri-Elayne". I always liked my name, but I
always hated telling it to other people....

BECAUSE NO ONE SPELLS MY NAME LIKE I TELL THEM TO!!!

    It's either Jeri with a G, or 2 R's, or a Y, or all of the above...
    Or the hyphen's missing...
Or the Elayne has an I in it, or it's spelled Alayn...

But the worst was Gery Allain!!!

My name is Kim Marie Chenausky, born Kim Marie Archambeau and adopted
to Kim Marie Norberg and later married to William Walter Chenausky.
(BILL)... Kim Marie is my name....now Kimberly may love her name,
and please don't take this personally, but I can't stand to be called
Kimberly, you know how you associate names with people...well I
was about 5 when I met a Kimberly ...and the girl never took
a shower! Sooooooo ever since I couldn't stand it....but then again
it may also have to do with the fact that my name is just KIM!
My mother's name is Jeraldine and she couldn't stand it, so when
my sister and I were born it was Susan NMN and Kim Marie....plain
and simple, yet I think elegant non the less.....kinda like Kim
Novac with last names like Archambeau and Chenausky it's a good thing it
wasn't Kimberly or it would have never fit on anything.....But this
is getting much longer than I intended. All I really wanted to
say is sometimes just plain Kim is nice!

-< PLAIN OLD KIM ALSO >-
My name is also just Kim, but it took me a long time to like it.
When I was little there was a little boy in my class who's name
was Kim and all the little girls were Kimberly. I also got lots
of form letters addressed to MR. Kim Kettle (my maiden name) and
now to MR. Kim Kordosky. I also got a letter telling me to register
for the draft when I turned 18. I was a very shy child and always
wanted to fit in with everyone else, so sometimes I let people call
me Kimberly, I even put Kimberly on a few legal papers. I didn't
start liking Kim until a couple years ago when I suddenly became
    more outgoing.

Hi -- my "formal" name is Sandra Leslie, but as you can intimate,
it's just too formal for me! It's also the name my mother used
whenever she was angry with me!!! Sandy seems to suit my more
easy-going manner. Didn't like my middle AT ALL until I filled
out all of the application forms for college 20 years ago.

My husband is a Jeff, disdains his formal name Jeffrey, but tolerates
it from his parents and other loved ones.

My kids also have unusual names -- Jaime Seth is our son, and he's
already learning how to deal with misspellings etc. When he sees
it spelled "Jamie" he insists that it's not his name, and will correct
people. I constantly have to tell people that yes, that's his "real"
name, and it's not a nickname for James, and please don't call him
Jim or Jimmy. My feeling is eventually he'll become "J. Seth" --
time will tell. Right now he's just 4!

Our newborn is Shaina Elise -- we've already gotten mail for her
spelled Shana or Shayna. And the mispronounciations are interesting.
Oh well, it's too late for us to change things now, so all we can
do is hope for the best!

I guess I like my name also...although I hate it when people try
to give me a nickname - Jules. My name is Julie Beth. Julie is
not as common as I think Judy is. I don't like it when people call
me Judy or Julia - somebody even called me Julieann once!

I got my name in a rather interesting way also. My siblings are:
Cheryl Ann, James Edward (Jim), Lorna Jean, Anita Marie, and Susan
    Elaine.

Apparently, Lorna Jean was going to be Julie Beth but my grandmother
(maternal) didn't like it! Maybe that's why we never got along
    that well....

My mother is Mary Margaret and my dad was Albert (Al) Benjamin --
I guess I'm glad I got the name that I did considering the rest
of my family!! I used to wish my middle name was Elizabeth but
now I am happy that it is just Beth.

I like my name now, but it's taken a while. I always thought
it was boring because my parents didn't give me a middle name,
I was just plain: Denise Theil.

Now I use my confirmation name as a middle name so I'm:
    Denise Lynn Theil.

What's good about my name is people don't often make up
nicknames for it. My family calls me Niece, and very few
friends over the years got away with calling me "D."
Other than that no one has shortened it and I wouldn't
    let them anyway.

My name is Dawn Marie. I like my name now but when I was in grammar
school and High School I was to crazy about it because it wasn't
common enough. Like I said now I think it is a very pretty name.
However, what I don't like about it is that people don't know
how to spell it correctly. Like when I call someone and leave and
phone message instead of spelling it DAWN they would say what is
his name (& Spell it Don). So now I haven't to spell it for most
of the people I talk to over the phone.

140.25LINETTE (Linnet Bird, Song Bird)CYPRES::EDDY_LITue Nov 01 1988 18:2827
Hi, I'm LINETTE MARIE FELICIY. I've always liked my name,
because I've never met another Linette. I have met a
Lynnette, but that's not my name, so I wasn't too shocked.
I'm Li-net, not Lynn-et....subtle difference, but not to me.
My Mom claims she made it up, and when the nuns questioned
her about what saint I was being named for, she scrambled and
came us with St. Linus. (As a child I always compared myself
with the Peanuts character "Linus", and, yes, I did suck my
    thumb and have a blankie.)

The only nickname I ever had was Linny (another Mom-original)
and I've always loved that name, probably because only my family
calls me Linny--everyone else in the world calls me Linette.
My goddaughter calls me Nette, and since it is a Katie-original,
it is special to me. BUT, if _anyone_ calls me Lynn, it _really_
bothers me, and I will take as much time as needed to correct
them. I, too, have to spell my name to everyone.

I've always loved being the only one!

    Linette :-)

P.S. Marie is for the BV Mary, and Felicity is my confirmation
name (chosen for its unique-ness and St. Felicity's strength of
    character!)

    Hollie,

That is a very pretty name. I knew a girl in high school who's
name was spelt like the christmas flower: Holly (which is fine,
but her last name was REATH) yes, yes, like the Christmas Wreath!

For some strange reason I went to school with quite a few people
who had name similar to the above. Not as bad as Holly Reath, but
kind of nice, I knew a girl born on Christmas and her parents named
her Carol - they called her their CHRISTMAS CAROL. Neat huh?

My Uncle, also born on Christmas Day was named NOEL. Never even
realized the connection until I was about 12. Interesting. I love
names with meaning. My Grandfather, William Burns Gailey was born
in Scotland. His middle name is after a Scotish Poet: Robert Burns,
if I ever have a daughter her middle name will be Gailey. A son,
his middle name will be Burns... (got off the subject a bit...
    but, I can't help it.

    Linette,

My brothe's wife Ingrid is pregnant and if they have a daughter
they will be naming her Linnea (pronounced Li-nay-a) pretty isn't
    it?

My name is Christina (without a middle name) I have always liked
my name, though I will correct anyone who calls me Christine. I
can't believe how many people do!!! They KNOW it's ChristinA, but
I think they are tooo lazy to pronouce the A. Oh well, I constantly
spell it over the phone, just to be sure people don't think it's
Christine. (its pretty but not my name)! I was named after my
fathers Mother from Russia. Her names before marriage was Christina
Gregorovna Lutchovitch. Gregorovna is feminine for Gregory which
was HER fathers name. Russia's custom for names if to give the
girl the father's name with "ovna" added to the end as her middle
name. If a son, he would have "ovitch" added to his father's first
name used for his middle name. i.e. Gregorovitch. My father did
not follow suit. He and my Mom decided to only give me Christina
as a first name without a middle. If they had I would be:
Christina Wasilovna Shepeluk. (my Dad's name is WASILY (Wesley
in English) His father is Wasily Joseph so my Dad is WASILY

My name is Sabrina Ursula Staffaroni (how's that for a mouthful?).
For quite some time, I was the only Sabrina, and certainly the only
Ursula in the state of Wisconsin. Since the advent of Charlie's
Angels, I have heard the name Sabrina crop up every now and then.
I still find it to be a unique sort of name.

If that's not original enough, my sister's name is Ilona (pronounced
EElona) Delores Staffaroni - Abrahamson (no, she didn't keep her
maiden name. And I have yet to run into any Ilonas.

My brother is the only "normal" one (and I say that in jest) in our
family. His name is Donald Jo. Almost a letdown, isn't it?

Oh, well, since I'm getting married next year, my name will shorten
up tremendously. My name will then be Sabrina Ursula Prentiss, and
I just might be able to fit my entire name on those exam sheets with
the 26 spaces. What do you think?

    Sabrina

My name is Kimberly Anne Belfield. I've always liked my name. I
sign my name as Kimberly and people mostly call me just Kim
(although Kimmie-Bimmie, Kimmie have also but thrown in there). I
am surprised at how many other Kims are in this notesfile, I thought I
    had an unusual name!!!

I am not married or anywhere near ready to have children YET I do
    have several names picked out!!!

I reading through this file I haven't noticed any REALLY unusual
names. My name is Zoe. Not so unusual now because it is becoming
very popular with the Yuppies, but back in the 60's when I was growing
up, no one had that name!. I loved it! I never, ever wanted to
be like everyone else (BORING) so I tolerated the misspellings (Jo,
Joe. Many times I've been a Mr. and was even put down as male when
I enrolled for college because some idiot thought my name was Joe!)
Yes, the kids teased me, but they were never really able to come
up with anything bad (Zoo was the worst, and I didn't mind it at
all.) Often people remarded how unusual and pretty my name was.
My only complaint is my middle name is Ann. BORING. I wish my
parents had given me another Z. My father threatened to make my
middle name Zeraphin, and I would've loved it, but my mother wouldn't
    let him.

I think most kids hate having unusual names because they want to
fit in and feel secure. I never had that problem because I had
a VERY secure childhood, and my parents taught me to be an individual
and not try to follow the pack. That's very important to teach
your kids. When I have kids, NONE of them will have ordinary names.
It's a nice thing to have a name that is completely your own.

My name is Kim (just Kim not Kimberly) and when I went to school
there were always at least 2 other Kim's in my class (all Kimberly
Ann(e) ) so It's been popular for quite a while. It may be you're
from a different generation (I'm 24) and it wasn't as popular then.

My first name is Karen, which I hate only because there is no reason
for the name. It was literally grab-bag. My parents thought that
I was going to be a boy, so they had the name Daniel picked. They
don't like female versions of male names, and I would have LOVED
the name Danielle! (Daniel is a great-uncle.) I'm the first
Karen in my family (whoopee), and my parents didn't know any Karen's
when I was born. Why they chose that name is beyond me.

I LOVE my middle name, which is Theresa. I knew about a million
Karen Ann's, but no Karen Theresa's. (My sister-in-law is Karen
Victoria, and I could hate her for that if I didn't like her so
much! ;^) ) I would go by Theresa, but its my mother's name,
and my niece's name. (Mom goes by Terry, my niece, Tess)

I believe in names with meanings. All of the names my husband and
I have picked have a special meaning. (see my entry in "twins"
    for the names and meanings).

140.34Yeah, I like my name...RIPPLE::BARTHOLOM_SHUser_Friendly does not = Idiot_ProofMon Oct 29 1990 19:3423
Well, I can definitely thank my parents for the name they gave me...I
love it....Shilah Ann (pronounced Shy-lah) It isn't very common,
but not so strange that people wonder where I come from.

My father was born and raised in The Netherlands, so most of my
brothers and sisters have at least one unusual name. For instance:

    Saskia Lynn (Sas-ke-yah) (long *e*)
Kelly Bernardus (Bernardus after our Grandfather)
    Shilah Ann (Shy-lah)
Amie Marijka (first name spelled the French way for *friend*, second
name pronounced Mar-i-ka) (long *i* sound)
Shawn Eliot (Eliot being chosen because it means friend of Abraham,
    meaning friend of God)

We all like our names (my brother Kelly does cringe at time though)
because of who picked them out for us.

Had I been a boy, I would have been a Phillip?

    Simply and forever,

    Shilah
140.35Raquel, not Rachel, as in the obvious, but no relation.19119::JANDROWFri Sep 13 1991 11:209
I, on the other hand, hate my name; Raquel. It's not so much that I hate
the name, but the aggrevation that goes with it. No one ever spells it
correctly, I am all too aften called Rachel (I dislike that name even
more), when I am on the phone, people think I say Carol, or Kelly
(which I don't mind) or Michelle, the list goes on. And with a name
like Raquel, there's a lot to live up to, for obvious reasons. If I
could have picked my own name, it would have been Jaquelyn. I have met
and worked with only one other Raquel, but she was called Rachel. I
guess I am lucky, though, I was almost Justina Maria--No offense
140.36Trudy FayePCOJCT::REISGod is my refugeFri Sep 13 1991 13:469
My name is Trudy Faye. When I was younger I didn't like it cause I
thought it was weird. As I grew into my teens I started to appreciate
it as it was different and I didn't know anyone else with it. Since
then I have met about 6 other Trudy's but only 2 "real" ones. The
others are Gertrude's which is the one problem I had in school when the
teachers insisted that I was a Gertrude!!! I should know, it's my
name!! I also had to fight with them over my father's name which is M H
They kept insisting it had to stand for something. His brother is D I !

When I was growing up, I didn't care for my name very much...Serena.
    1) Everyone spelled it incorrectly; Cerina, Sirina,Sierrina etc. etc.
    2) Nothing ever had my name on it, I had to get things specially made
    3) Everyone thought my name was Sabrina or Salina and someone once even
       called me Sophie!
    4) and of course there was Serena on the tv show Bewitched (Samantha's
wild cousin - henceforth Serena the Witch........

But, now I like me name because it is different and still not that
common a name. So I put up with the incorrect spellings and the
    Sabrina and Salina calling.

Serena Marie Lyons (married name - which someone said to me, "Serena
Lyons - sounds fake, like a soap opera name!" ) (gee, thanks!)

formerly Serena Marie Bergeron (everyone misprounced my last name too!)

I like my name- finally! My name is Deborah Marie Harris. I think it
goes well together! I have a sister named Kimberley Anne whom we in the
family call "Kimmie". She's our Kimmie- and she's cute so the name
fits! My other sisters are Phyllis Noreen, Elizabeth Ann and Samantha
( not sure of her middle name since she is part my biological mother's
and stepfather's). I use to hate my name because my "sweet" sisters
used to call me "De-bra-less" when I was 11,12 yrs. Then people would
call me Debra-yuck!(personal opinion). My name means the bee, and I
suit it quite well because I am hyper and bubbly!
