133.0. "BABYNAME BOOKS" by NEURON::GLASER () Mon Sep 28 1987 18:56

    			<A GREAT BOOK>

I found this great book over the weekend and wanted to share it
    with you.

THE BABY BOOMER'S NAME GAME by Christopher P. Andersen
    	  c. 1977, 1987

    This book has information like:

        - You Are What You're Named
    	- What Will A Name Say About Your Child?
    	- The Secret History of Every Name
    	- Your Child's Name Is Your Child's Fortune
    	- Names and Nicknames
    	- Don't You Or Your Child Be The Victim Of A Name
        - How To Win the Name Game
        - Over One Thousand NAmes and What They Really Mean

Does anyone else have names of books they'd like to share?

133.1"Dictionary of First Names"NEXUS::C_JOHNSWed Sep 30 1987 00:5528
We found a new baby names book that we really like. It is titled:

THE NEW AMERICAN DICTIONARY OF FIRST NAMES by Leslie Dunkling and
          William Gosling, 1983.

The cover lists that the book gives:
    	Their Meanings
    	Their Histories
    	Their Social Significance
Their Popularity Now and in the Past
       	and much more.

I really like how the introduction discusses the history of baby
name books, and the ill reputation for accuracy in some! I.e.,
don't believe everything you read about what a name means.
For names where the meaning is unknown or disputed, they are clear
on this point. For instance, they don't give a meaning for BETHANY.
They mention that BETH means "House" in Hebrew, but that the meaning
of BETHANY is unknown. Other books usually say that it means "House
of Sorrow." However, I found one book that said that this was
incorrect and that Bethany may mean "House of Figs or Dates."

Anyway, I prefer reference books that really attempt to be honest,
not to just sell millions of copies.

I'll look for your book in the store. It sounds promising!

Oops, Sorry about that, I looked up Milo and Jerome, Milo is miller,
Jerome is Latin for sacred or holy name

Where did you find those books? All I can ever find are the typical
baby books that don't have any name that become popular in the last
    30 years.

    Tracy:

I found the BABYNAMES book at a local bookstore here
in Colorado Springs called The Chinook Bookshop. Until
I found this book, I felt like you did, all the books
    	on naming babies were 'old'.

I haven't tried ordering this book - but I'm sure you
could through some of the chain-type stores. If you
need more info on the book, let me know.

A good source for Irish first names comes from a pocket guide that
my mother just brought back from a visit to Ireland:

A Pocket Guide to Irish First Names

    	by Ronan Coghlan

    	Published and printed by

    	The Appletree Press Ltd.

    	7 James Street South

    	Belfast BT2 8DL

    	1985

    	ISBN 0-86281-153-8

    	It's 2.50 Irish pounds

I have "The Best Baby Name Book in the whole wide world." That's
a big claim for a book, but it is fun to read. It has a lot of
interesting stuff in it about strange names as well as things to
consider when choosing a name, legal information and more. It
also has a list of 100 most popular girls, and 100 most popular
boys names - mine is from 1983. This is actually a very useful
list for looking at names quickly.

Does anyone have a newer version of this book? I'd love to see
how the list of popular names is changing. I can't find it anymore
at the place I bought this one.

Oh yeah, the author is Bruce Lansky and it's published by Meadowbrook.
Mine is a revised edition from 1984.

Another vote for Dunkling and Gosling. Here's the full dope:

The New American Dictionary of First Names. Leslie Dunkling
and William Gosling. Signet, NY, 1985.

It's paperback, and should be availale in most bookstores.

It's reliable, complete, and up-to-date. What I like about it
is the social stuff they include, for example: how movie and TV
stars influence names, popularity with different groups
(American, British, black, etc.), common misspellings, etc.
	Very highly recommended.
