I don't know whether or not Laura is an Italian name, but I believe
the star of the movie Wifemistress was Laura Antonelli, who was
in this Italian movie with Marcello Mastriani.

You might want to flip through a biography of Sophia Loren. It
    should show some Italian names.

Laura is most definitly an Italian name, I don't know that meaning
off hand but could ask my friend, Laura Pusateri. More Italian
first girl names.... Angela, Tina Marie (or just Tina and forms
of it, like Christina and Christine), Rose, (although others will
argue it's Irish), Martina, Samantha, Lisa...I could come up with
    more if you'd like...

Thought I'd add Linda and Maria while I was thinking of it,
I have a friend named Maria Forlani and she goes by Ria, I've
also seen it spelled Rhea ('Carla' on "Cheers"'s real name).

	I thank Carol and Loreen.
I am interested by the meaning of this first name.
Could you ask to your friend L. Pusateri.Does she think it's an
old name or not.

First, I'll have to correct myself, Most of the names I gave you
have their origin in LATIN, I say, What's the difference?!

I was just looking at a names book and saw Laura but can't remember
what it said now, I'll have to look again. NO, she doesn't think
    it's 'old' at all!

Note that in English, Laura is pronounced like 'Lora', but that
in Italian, it would be 'Lowra' (ow like cow).
102.9try greekKAOA05::LEWISMichaelTue Dec 22 1987 14:2813
Note that many 'latin' names actually occur at an earlier time in
the various ancient greek languages (probably others too). For example
any of the 'Christina' type names come from the greek root CHRISTOS,
which I seem to vaguely remember as translating as 'king'. It's
"spelling" has lasted well over the years considering that we can
approximate it as "XRISTOS", perhaps the X for ch is where we get
the short form for Christmas of X-mas. 'Angela's come from the greek
root ANJELOS which translates more or less literally as 'messenger'.
It would be interesting to hear from someone who knows modern greek
to see if the original meanings have survived the centuries.

No, I don't recall encountering anything concerning 'Laura', but
    I'll look.

Any more ideas for Italian first names? My sister is due with her
second child in February, and her husband does not like the name I
suggested for a girl (Chiara)... Their first child is a boy, named
Rocco. Last name DiMeco. Any ideas? I read off most of the names in
this note to her, and none really struck her like Chiara. Boy's names
    are also helpful..who knows?

I'm an italian (an italian living in Italy, I mean) so I hope I can help
you about italian names.

LAURA is a flower name (like other italian girl names) and it means "LAUREL",
it was used also as a boy name (male form is LAURO) but now it sounds old.

Since many centuries ago a laurel crown was given to the winners of a war
LAURA can also mean WINNER.

It is a very old name, I know a song 700 years old telling a story about a
girl named LAURA.

I can also correct some errors:

102.2	TINA is a short form for CLEMENTINA

102.13	GIUSEPPE means JOSEPH
ROSARIO comes from the name of a catholic prayer
TORRE is a last name, and not a christian name
VITO is impossible to translate but it sounds like LIFE

102.14	CADARRO is a last name, and not a christian name

102.15	the spellings are BIANCA (female, it means WHITE, but also without sin)
	and LUCA (male, biblic name)

102.16	the spelling is CARMELA (female, biblic name)

    Marco (Turin - Italy)

What region is the girl's name "Demerice" from. I have always loved
that name ever since my girlfriend and I met in our teens. No one else
I talk to ever heard of it either. I know its Italian, but that is
    about it.

    Thanks!
