William means PROTECTOR. I don't remember the nationality. My
nephew is LIAM, which is gaelic for "Little William". Both my paternal
nationality (Scot) and my husbands family (Irish) are Celtic, so
it could be Celtic in origin. If my high school French serves me
there is a French derivation Guillame (probably misspelled). William
    always sounds English to me.

My father and brother, father-in-law, brother-in-law and an uncle
are all named this name. My Mom used to say this poem to my brother
    when he was a tot:

My mother calls me William and my father calls me Will
My teacher calls me Willie, but the fella's call me Bill !

When my brother was in grade school he was known as Butch (had a crew
cut). Although it was at time a hassle to have both my Dad and
brother named Bill, now that my Dad is gone, its very special to
have my brother named for him.
