80.0. "Loreen/Laurene" by 36903::SARANITA () Mon Feb 09 1987 12:44

    I quess I could add my own name since I don't know the meaning
    or where it came from. My mom made up the spelling but it is
    usually spelled 'Laurene', at least that's the way people seem
    to want to spell it.

    My mom liked Lori and wanted it to sound like her name, Eileen,
    so, they came up with 'Loreen'.

    anyone have any clue what it means?

    You know, I've meet two Loreen's in my time. They are both in their
    early thirties and each of them claim that their mother made it up
    also. They also spell their name as you do. I haven't a clue
    as to what it means. I call them both Lori which is find with them.

80.2Have you ever tried to find it in a book?36903::SARANITAWed Feb 25 1987 12:0710
    <RE .1>

    I guess the spelling isn't that hard for someone to dream up...I
    just tell people, spell it the way it sounds! I've only met one
    other person in my time (I'm 24) that spells it the same way. I
    go by Loreen. Are either of the Loreen's you know Digital Employees?
    Do either use the notes file? If so, tell them to say 'Hi'.

80.3she was an employee at one time7300::OSTIGUYWed Feb 25 1987 14:4911
    One of the Loreen's I know was a DEC employee. She has since moved
    to Florida. She was introduced to me as Lori, so I was calling
    her that for about a year. Then she saw me writing a card to my
    cousin Lori and was surprised to see that I was using the same spelling
    instead of Laurie and asked me if my cousin's real name was Loreen
    That's when she told me it was her real name. She was the first
    I had meet. The other was one of my customers at a resturant I
    was moonlighting in. I think it's a very pretty name and so much
    different then Lori Ann (which is my cousin's full name).

80.4A rose by any other name...36903::SARANITAThu Feb 26 1987 16:0110

    Thank you! I of course, hated it when I was younger...everyone
    always asking me my name 2 or 3 times before they got it right,
    it drove me crazy. Then in College I met someone (who is now a
    very good friend), who was just fasinated by my whole name...to
    this day, he is the only one who calls me Loreen Rose.

    What's your full name..., is it titled in here somewhere?

80.5Anna 7300::OSTIGUYFri Feb 27 1987 11:4414
    I do believe I entered my name in somewhere in this file. It's
    Anna Ostiguy Bogart. I never had a middle name; I was named after
    my mother so I use my maiden name "Ostiguy" as a middle name now.
    My twin's full name is Mary Ostiguy (no middle name, we were born
    in Germany, maybe they don't have middle names there!). My brother
    is Lance James Ostiguy and my other sister is Michelle Lee Ostiguy.

    I always hated my name too when I was small. Plus it's my mother's
    name and I hated being "little Anna". In school, I just introduced
    myself as Ann. It felt more like a young girl's name. I always
    pictured Anna as a old lady in a rocking chair!! I like it now though.

80.6LoreneGIGI::TRACYWed Mar 11 1987 15:507
    I also know a Lorene (slightly different spelling) who works for
    DEC. She is the youngest in her family and I think she said her
    parents also made it up to go with the rest of the names in the
    family (Coreen, Marlene, Dean, Eugene).

80.7i found a meaning7300::OSTIGUYMon Mar 23 1987 10:1510
    Hi I found the name in my baby book, "A Treasury of Baby Names"

    Your exact spelling isn't included though. It's listed as a diminutive
    of Laura. It's the fem. form of Lawrence which means in Latin:
    "crowned with laurel". Var. and dim. are Laureen, Laurel, Laurella,
    Laurelle, Lauren, Laurena, Laurene, Lauretta, Laurette, Lolly, Lora,
    Loralie, Lorelie, Lorella, Lorelle, Loren, Lorena, Lorene, Loretta,
    Lorette, Lori, Lorie, Lorinda, Lorita, Lorna, Lorne, Lorrie, Lorry.

    I knew a girl named Laureen when I was a kid in school. She always
    told me that her name was passed down from generation to generation
    in her family. She'd be 22 now, because that's how old I am.

    Thanks for finding the meaning...I've heard it was the fem. form
    for Lawrence, but never knew the meaning, or that there was so
    many different forms and spellings, that was very interesting,
    THANKS for sharing.

    I'm on a residency and get very little time to even read my mail
    and unfortunely, no time to read this, it took me awhile but
    I still appreciate the input!!!!

80.10Lorie, spelled LorieMMO01::LSMITHTue Sep 22 1987 19:3323
My name is Lorie, named after the movie actor Lorie Nelson. I don't remember
her but my mom liked her as an actor so that is where I got my name.

Adding the "e" to Lorie always made me feel like I was finishing the word
instead of spelling it Lori (EX. you wouldn't spell Katie - Kati (I don't
think). I have never seen over 2 people (not including family) that could
spell my name. It has been spelled Lori (dozens of times), Laurie (which the
sounding is completely different), and Lorrie (which is closer). I have to
(to this day) repeat my name several times before someone understands "Lorie"
not "Laurie" and sometimes they still say "Laurie". I have gotten to the
point that I don't even correct them. You would think someone could
distinguish the sounding between "Lorie" and "Laurie" but evidently, they
can't. I didn't think "Lorie" was such a difficult name! HA

Moral of the story: If you know a Lorie, Lori, Laurie, Laureen, etc., make
sure you pronounce their name right. I know that are a lot of spellings and
pronounciations, but it makes a person feel better when you say their name
correctly.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

Lorie

        Excuse my ignorance, but I guess I'm one of those people!

     I certainly know what it feels like to be called a hundred different
    things besides my name, but I just don't see the difference
    between the pronunciation of Laurie and Lori and Lorie...or
    however you want to spell it....is the accent on a different
    part of the word or maybe I'm just tone deaf like everyone
    else who says it.

    sorry...

    Hi,

    My cousin who's name is Lori feels these a difference in the
    pronunciation also. Her name is pronunced with the 'or' sounding
    just like the word, or..... With Laurie, she feels that it should
    sound like the 'au' as in laugh. (sort of a new england accent)
    It's kinda hard to explain in writing and I was never good at
    phoenix.....

    sorry, I just don't see it....my name, Loreen , sounds the
    same when it's spelled Laureen, I guess it's just me, they
    sound the same, my friend Laura doesn't see the difference
    either...

______
Well....this is going to be hard. It's much easier to pronounce it in person.
Let's see....

Lorie - You pronounce it "Lor-e". Lor like in orr.

Lori- Sounding is same, just spelling is different.

Laurie - You pronounce it "Lar-e". Lar like in Bar.

Doesn't this help or make sense?

Lor-e

80.15CLOVAX::SARANITAFri Sep 25 1987 14:2215
    re -1
    I guess pronouncing it "lar-e" makes more sence than the "au" in
    laugh, ( which BTW is the same sound as an ordinary "a" in fat or
    hat....according to Webster's and is quite hard, almost physically
    impossible, to say with an "r" and not still keep the "hat" sound,
    it ends up coming out like "bar" anyway)

    ....but I have never met a Laura (and I know quite a few) or a
    Laurie that pronounces "lar-e" or "lar-a". I guess
    all the Laura's and Laurie's I know prefer it pronounced
    with the "or".

    of course, dialects could have a lot to do with the whole thing...

80.16Do you pronounce 'Mary', 'marry' and 'merry' the same?REGENT::EPSTEINBruce EpsteinTue Oct 13 1987 11:383
    This reminds me of a girl I knew in New York named 'Merri' (pronounced
    like 'merry'). If she ventured too far from NY, there's no difference
    between her name and 'Mary'.
80.17Lor-e, Law-ree, LarryEDUHCI::WARRENWed Nov 18 1987 19:4812
    I think dialects do have a lot to do with it...

    I wouldn't pronounce Laura Lar-a (that would be Lara, like Larry
    with an a). I would pronounce it Law-ra; Laurie would be Law-ree.
    But then I'm guilty of pronouncing Lori (etc.) that way as well.

    Didn't you know that people from New England don't like Rs? Unless,
    of course, there isn't one in the word (eg., Cuber, where Castro
    is from).

    Re .17, Because of my N.E. accent, I have a habit of pronouncing
    my own name - Lorna - "Lawna" - which makes people from other parts
    of the country think I'm saying my name is "Launa" - instead of
    Lorna.  It does get confusing!

    And, I can certainly sympathize with people who have been called
    everything but their real name. The name Lorna seems to stump a
    lot of people. Your name is *what*???! Combined with my last name,
    St.Hilaire, it makes for a LOT of spelling sometimes, too!!!

    I haven't seen my name but its close to Laurene.
    My name is Lawrene LeRon. I too have people who like to re-spell my
    name. They often put a "c" in it to make it "Lawrence". It's pronounce
    like "Lauren or LAW ren", not "Loreen".
