43.0. "R O N" by 52452::MAURO () Fri Sep 12 1986 20:12

    RON

    	Our 19 months son is called Ron; this is an israeli name meaning
    joy, or a wellcomed arrival. Its hebrew dimminutive is Roni, fairly
    much used as an affective way for calling him, and its meaning is
    'my joy', or 'my wellcomed arrival'.

    	The name is not uncommon at all (not tremendously popular,either)
    here in Israel, and we can also find it on Spain ( but, as the local
    translation for Rum, the well_known Caribean alcoholic beverage,
    rather than a babyname. Anyways, we find it sweet, and our baby
    does not seem to dislike it at all, till now.

43.1Long "o" or short "o"?NCMWVX::BERNDTRon - ILLEGITIMUS NON CARBORUNDUMWed Oct 08 1986 21:296
    Is that pronounced with a "long" o or a "short" o ?
    My name is Ronald (derived from Reginald) but I always go by Ron.
    When I visit Italy they pronounce it with a long o, here in the
    states we pronounce it with a short o. ;')

    Ronald James Berndt.

    It is pronounced with a short o. There would be a different letter
    for it in Hebrew, if we wanted to pronounce it with a long o.

    I don't know if this counts for anything, but here goes:

    In "La Morte D'Arthur" we are told, not only that Arthur's sword
    is named Excalibur, but also that his spear's name is "Ron". Does
    Ron have anything to do with power or, Heaven forbid, virility?
