4.0. "Kira" by 9409::KRISTY (Ask and ye shall be attacked) Thu May 15 1986 11:37

My daughter's name is Kira. I, too, thought the name was unique,
but since she was born (a little over 3 years ago), I've met about
4 other sets of parents who named their daughter Kira. I've heard
it is a Russian name, but I'm not sure.

    Kristy,

I think that is a very pretty name, I've never heard it before.

How do you pronounce Kira??? Long i or short i?

I don't think that Kristy gets into this file anymore so I will
answer for her. Kristy pronounces it with a long i. She is a very
pretty girl to go along with her very pretty name.

Actually, we pronounce Kira like it would be spelled Keera.

MY NIECE IS NAMED KIRA. MY SISTER GOT THE NAME FROM THE MOVIE
    "XANADU"

In XANADU, Kira was (supposedly) one of the Muses, from greek
mythology one of the nine daughters of Mnemosyne (how about that for a
girls name?) and Zeus, each of whom presided over a different art
    or science:

    Calliope	- Epic poetry
    Clio	- History
Erato	- Lyric poetry and mime
Euterpe	- Lyric poetry and music
    Melpomene	- Tragedy
Polyhymnia	- Singing, rhetoric and mime
Terpsichore	- Dancing and choral singing
Thalia	- Comedy and pastoral poetry
    Urania	- Astronomy

So, now the thing to do is figure out which Muse Kira really was. I
haven't been able to find any reasonable derivation for any of the
"true" Muses that gives Kira as a name, but then it was only a movie.

Kira is a Persian name meaning "sun". It fits our daughter quite
well, as she's a real sunny blonde with bright blue eyes...
