881.0. "What's up with Japan..." by DECWET::KARMALI () Fri Jun 30 1995 19:47

Part of my IRA is invested in Scudder's Japan Fund. I got in
last year but ever since it has dropped 30%. The Kobe earthquake
had some part in this drop but I am not sure if this is a good
long term investment. Should I stay put or take my losses and
invest in a aggresive growth fund.

Thanks,
Sulaiman

I suggest you see topic 148. The Nikkei has been headed downward
since even before that topic was created .......

True, the Nikkei has dropped a lot since a year ago. However, some of
the poor performance may be related to your fund, since the yen has
appreciated against the dollar over the same period. The net effect
for my Japan fund (TR Price) is mostly a wash.

i.m in this fund also. got in last year, it went up a nice 20% into the
summer and has fallen since. BUT... i'm hanging out. long haul. i'm
DCA'ing 150/mo with a term in 3-5 yrs. i expect this to be worth quite a
bit 3-5 yrs out.

Yesterday I got the annual report for Fidelities International
funds. Several of the fund managers of the funds covered
mention the same thing, losses being canceled by the Yen's strength.

Diversified International's manager even says investors in this
fund will lose *when* the dollar regains some strength against
the Yen..... I'm in this fund and I'm getting ready to take
my modest profit in it and bail out (and this fund is diversified,
I'd be dropping bricks if I was in a pure Japan fund myself!)

I agree that the Yen seems to have topped out, so that its time to get
out of the Japan fund. No real cure in sight for the Japanese economy
since the reforms of the Hosokawa govt. seem to have been buried by his
successors. So the Nikkei isn't going anywhere soon.

Yes, I saw that on the news also. But along with that went
some dollar buying yesterday that strenghtened the dollar
	by a few yen.
